    Born in the Vale of Evesham, Worcestershire, Dan took a keen interest in music from an early age playing tuba and trombone with his local brass band. After leaving school he embarked on a 10 year career as a hotelier integrating it with a developing career as a freelance musician playing double bass, sousaphone and bass saxophone with big bands including the internationally Pasadena Roof Orchestra.In 2003, he enrolled in the Band Musicianship course at Salford University where he studied composition and arranging with Prof. Peter Graham. Dan's first test-piece An Elgar Portrait was selected as the 4th Section set work at the Swiss National Brass Band Championships in 2007 and again at the Pontins Championships the following year. He then went on to write the test-piece New World Sketches which was set as the 2nd Section test-piece for the British Regional Contests in 2009.In 2009, Dan became Composer in Association with the Cory Band, helping them with their winning programmes at several Brass in Concert Championships. In 2012 he became the Arranger in Association with Black Dyke Band and has been involved with many of the band's exciting projects including his arrangement of Recycled for the ground breaking multimedia campaign - Danger Global Warming Project and the band's collaboration with British composer Tolga Kashif in 2012 for his Olympic Anthem Let Your Light Shine.In 2015, Dan had a number of major works performed at International contests which included Realms of Asgard: Yggdrassil - a new test-work commissioned by Jaren Hornmusikkforening to be used as their choice work at the Norwegian Brass Band Championships, Ocean of Storms - an exciting new work for Grimethorpe Colliery Band's Brass in Concert programme and his test-piece Visions which was used as a 4th Section National Finals test-piece.Dan is currently working full time at the University of Salford, lecturing in Composition and Arranging. He continues to work as a freelance composer working with a number of leading soloists, brass and wind bands around the world.

    In Many Lands - The Adventures of Mary Seacole - Paul Saggers

    In Many Lands - The Adventures of Mary Seacole was commissioned by The Royal Marines Band Service for The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. The first performance of the piece was on 16 April 2022 in Huddersfield Town Hall to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NYBBGB. It was next performed in Birmingham Town Hall (on 28 April 2022) at a joint charity concert of the NYBBGB and The Band of Her Majestyas Royal Marines, Collingwood, for the European Brass Band Association Prelude Concert. The work is a musical account of the life of Mary Seacole who was a British-Jamaican nurse and businesswoman who set up the "British Hotel" behind the lines during the Crimean War. The work takes inspiration from Seacoleas biography Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands. The work is divided into three movements:

    Sweeney Todd Suite - Malcolm Arnold

    Malcolm Arnold's ballet, Sweeney Todd, was first staged in 1959 by The Royal Ballet Company with choreography by John Cranko. The music was later adapted as a concert work and it is from this version that this brass band arrangement, by Phillip Littlemore, is made. The original concert suite lasts some 20 minutes, but this version has been shortened to a more manageable eight minutes.The first performance of this arrangement was given on the 22nd October 2006 at the Malcolm Arnold Festival, Derngate, Northampton by the Rushden Windmill Band conducted by Richard Graves.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section.Duration 8 minutes.

    "Blackbird Special" is a song by American band Dirty Dozen Brass Band.The song is an entertainment piece, a good concert opener or encore.When used as a concert opener one may let the different sections of the band enter the stage one by one playing in order of appearance.Percussion section may play their parts ad lib. The most important is the groove of the piece.Please pay attention to strict articulation from bar 17. Be aware of the marcatos at 33. The last note of the slurs at 41 must be not be too short.It's important to hold the note values, especially in bars 49, 51, 53 and 55.From 57 and throughout the piece, the percussion may invite the audience to join for handclaps.As an extra effect, the Bass Tubas may stand at 57, the Horns at 59, backrow Cornets and Trombones at 61 and Euphonium/Baritone/Solo Cornets at 63.

    Sing, Sing, Sing, written in 1936 by Louis Prima, has become one of the definitive songs of the big band and Swing Era. Although written by Prima, it is often most associated with Benny Goodman.     Temperamental - Jonathan Bates

    DURATION: 3'30". DIFFICULTY: Difficult. 'Temperamental' was composed as the opening item to the Reg Vardy Band's 2019 Brass in Concert Championships programme, which revolved around the 4 temperaments of Human Nature - a theory by the Greek philsopher Galen from 450 BC. This funk-inspired short concert work is deliberately very schizophrenic in nature, encompassing all 4 moods and feelings into the music and featuring a number of soloists from within the band, notably the Flugel Horn, Solo Trombone and Percussion section. .

    Tireless Flame, The - Jonathan Bates

Gateshead, 'The Tireless Flame' is an energetic and driven concert finisher inspired by the idea of a fire burning at different velocities. but never truly going out. The outer 2 sections are the work are in a minimalist style using effects typical of the style such as phasing. and development throughout, whilst the central section is almost hymn like in nature, showcasing the band's ability to control the . extremes of dynamics. .

    Children of Sanchez (Bra) - Chuck Mangione - Mike Kilmartin

    This made famous by the legendary flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, and is also the soundtrack to the 1979 film Children of Sanchez. Chuck Mangione won a Grammy for the title song. This arrangement was written for the Unite the Union Band for 2014 Butlins Brass Band Championships. It is powerful and will kick start any concert or concert off with a bang.

    Recuerdos de Viajes - Francois Glorieux/Paul Voet

    The Belgian piano virtuoso and composer Francois Glorieux (Kortrijk, 1932) has had a long international career as a concert pianist and conductor. As composer and arranger he worked, among others, with Stan Kenton and with the famous London brass ensemble 'Locke Brass Consort'. With that ensemble as well as with his own orchestra 'The Francois Glorieux Brass and Percussion Orchestra', he recorded many of his own compositions. His pupil trumpeter Paul Voet wrote an arrangement for brass band of these 'travel memories'. This is really a most fine original concert piece for brass band.
