Meet the Band! - John Blanken

Meet the Band! was written as an 'opening work', but it is also perfectly suitable for performing halfway through a concert programme. During the introduction, the cornet players are lined up on both sides of the stage, while the trombone players take centre stage. Gradually all the sections of the band are introduced to the audience. Meet the Band? You certainly have!

    Aria - Philip Sparke

Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The band takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. A cornet then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close. A fantastic new addition to the solo repertoire for this much neglected solo instrument.

Tales & Legends - Etienne Crausaz

This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!

Moon Song, Sun Dance - Philip Sparke

Moon Song, Sun Dance was commissioned by flugel horn virtuoso, Claude Romailler, and premiered by him at the Swiss National Solo and Quartet Championships in April 2012.As the title implies, the work is in two contrasting movements, which can be performed separately or together.Moon Song opens with a flowing modal theme, which the soloist embellishes before the band takes centre stage. A central section brightens the mood with a new melody over the lightest of accompaniments; this is once again developed by the soloist until the original theme reappears, played by the band. This introduces a cadenza for the soloist which either closes the movement, or can be extended to link directly to the second movement.Sun Dance is a vivace 6/8 scherzo which opens with a flourish from the band. The soloist then introduces the main theme, which in turn is taken up by the band. A short bridge passage heralds a change of key and a new melody from the soloist. A brief central interlude then introduces a change of meter and recalls the main melody of Moon Song, before a recapitulation leads to a florid coda, which brings the work to a close.Solo part: difficulty 5

Dancing Trolls [Norwegian Dance] - Oystein Olsen Vadsten

"Dancing Trolls" is a sequel to "The Battle of the Hats", which was published in 2015. Like "The Battle of the Hats", "Dancing Trolls" is a piece of music based on Norwegian traditional dances. This time around, its the reinlender dance which takes centre stage. The music is composed by Oystein Olsen Vadsten who keeps the strong melodic and tempo, which is dear to this kind of dance. Admittedly given a make-over with a more rhythmic accompaniment and more exciting harmonization. This makes it a fun piece, both to Listen to and play. The reinlender dance derives from the Rhineland in Germany, and is also known as the German Polka. To the conductor:Because this is a dance form whichis dependent on the right "swing", it is of great importance to keep as close to the metronome mark as possible. A steady groove, primarily specified by the drum set, is also essential for a good result. Remember to keep a good balance between the melody -carrying instruments and the accompaniment. Good luck and have fun with this "crazy" little tune.

LIGHT WALK (Brass Band Set) - Barrie Gott

The 'big-band' arrangement that brought the arranging skills of Barrie Gott instantly to the attention of the brass world. Still a hit wherever it is played, this 'great fun' music allows the band to 'let its hair down' and the Flugel Horn the chance to take centre stage.

    Arioso - Bach, J.S.

Never averse to using a good melody in several arrangements... after all he must count as the finest arranger in the history of music... Bach not only uses this Arioso in a Cantata but also a harpsichord concerto. His characteristic long melodic line never loses its hold over the listener's attention. In this arrangement the middle part of the band holds centre stage.

Dark Arteries Suite - Gavin Higgins

Dark Arteries was commissioned by Rambert Dance Company and first performed in May 2015 with the Tredegar Town Band sharing the stage with Rambert dancers. Dark Arteries is a personal and at times highly wrought response to the Miners Strike and its aftermath. It is in three movements, the first and last are expansive, with widely contrasting sound worlds, from dark, brooding melodies and the haunting sounds of solo flugel horn to wild syncopations on cornets, suggestive of an imposing, but often bleak mining landscape. In 2016 Higgins re-worked Dark Arteries into a virtuoso concert suite, which captures the essence of the work in three connected movements.Dark Arteries Suite was premiered by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, conducted by Bramwell Tovey at the Barbican Centre, London, 22 April 2017.
