Commissioned by Radoy Brass for their 20 years anniversary.This version was first performed by Manger Skulemusikklag in 2005.The Work is devided into Five Scenes:1. Sverdet (The Sword) 3:452. Advarsel - fra en vis mann (Warning - from a Wise Man) 2:303. Dragen (The Dragon) 3:004. Advarsel II - fra syngende fugler (Warning II - from singing birds) 1:355. Gull - forbannelsen (Gold - The Curse) 2:50Total durata 13:30This work is based on five scenes from the tale about "Sigurd Favnesbane" (Sigurd the dragonslayer). Moods and atmospheres in the piece represent my way of retelling the old myth.1. The SwordThe dwarf blacksmith Regin is hammering and sharpening the edges of the magical sword Gram. After three attempts the sword is finally sharp enough to kill a dragon. 2. Warning - from a Wise manRichard Wagners opera Sigfried is based on the same story. In the opera the hero get warned by a wise man. He tells the secret of how to survive an attack of the dragon by hiding in a hole in the pathway and then kill the dragon with the sword as thedragon passes on its way to the river to drink water.3. DragonThe Dragon (Favne) guards a fantastic treasure, but he is also the brother of the blacksmith Regin. Favne get killed and his blood flows slowly while he laments (trombone/bass trombone).4. Warning II - from singing birdsWhile frying the heart, Sigurd burns his thumb and put it into his mouth to cool it down. Then he swallow a drop of fresh magic dragon blood which transfers the ability to understand the birdlanguage. The birds sing warnings to Sigurd telling himthat Regin will betray him and later kill him. Sigurd then kills Regin instead.5. Gold - the CurseSigurd takes the gold treasure and escapes on the horseback of Grane. But his robbery of the gold lead him into trouble: The gold is banned and a curse will hit everyone whotakes it...Myth is a programmatic work where the story is quite clearly illustrated throughout the piece:In the first movement you can hear the blacksmith working with hammer on ambolt while the heat is intense from the glows. The dwarf has got his own theme i lower brass (bar 4-5). The hero Sigurd has his own identifying chord (2 bars before F). Thechord is also a symbol of the sword.In the second movement the warning from the wise man is expressed in the lyric bass line.The airblow in instruments illustrate the dragon Favne on his way out of his cave, and later the blood flows slowly. The dragon takes his last deep breath after a painful duet in trombones. The birds sing their motifs (lightly, but not cheerfulthough), until Sigurd cuts the head off Regin and it hits the ground.The last movement describes the atmosphere andstate of mind as the curse infects the obsessed thief.

£65.00Four Sketches - Simon Dobson
Simon Dobson wrote his 'Four Sketches' at the request of Peter Bossano, Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's death. The first movement, 'Fanfare',quotes directly from the opening violin melody from Britten's song cycle Les Illuminations. This melodic line is superimposed upon sonorous Lydian mode chords to project a majestic sound. The second movement, 'Prayer', is adefinite contrast, being and much more reflective and pensive in it's mood, and featuring a dream like euphonium cadenza. The third movement, 'Funeral March', builds from a soft chordal opening to a chaotic andconfusedfortississimo climax with flourishes in the cornets and pounding tri-tones across the basses, before plunging into silence for a flugel cadenza to finish. The final Finale movement is much more positive from the off, withits jaunty melodies over a Brittenesque ostinato. The block chordal passages offer a crashing climax, making for an exciting conclusion to an excellent new work for the medium. Simon Dobson's 'Four Sketches' was the winningentry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition held in Brussels in March 2002.

Three Gentle Giantswas commissioned by Grenland International Brass Festival as a test piece for the 2nd division in 2008.Three Gentle Giants. The three giants each have their own monologue which leads into a conversation. They gather recognition and respect from each others views as the dialogue evolves. Eventually they find a more nutual and singular expression to their conversation.The giants are old with a long life behind them. This can be heard through a slow, melancholic waltz. A waltz is dance commonly linked to festiveoccasions, such as weddings, but for the giants it holds much more significance. It gives room to think about people they have met, placesthey have been, and all that life has given them.Quietly it ends, more or less like it began. "Song for Frances" is a classic love ballad, written for concert band and brass band, with a soloist on euphonium.The piece always has the soloist in focus and gives him plenty of room to show off, both a warm sound and technical skills. In the first part of "Song for Frances", the basic melody is clearly presented, while the rest of the piece is more of a written "as if improvisation" with various melodic and technical "whims". The piece will be perfect for any euphoniumist looking for a challenge.

£54.95Sonata - Derek Bourgeois
This work, composed in 1998, was commissioned by the American trombonist Don Lucas as a work for trombone and piano and first performed by him in Birmingham on 19th May 2000. Subsequently, I arranged the music for both solo trombone and brass band and solo trombone and wind band so that it now exists in three formats. The first movement, in B flat major, is brisk and energetic, and is cast in sonata form. The second subject is gentler and more lyrical. The second movement, a scherzo in C major, is the most complex of the four. Basically the structure is a rond. For a long time the music remains in the opening 5/8 time until a new theme introduces more broken rhythms in a more jazzy idiom. After a return of the opening theme the following episode is more tonally ambiguous. Finally, the main theme returns to round off the movement. The third movement, a lyrical adagio, is really one long extended melodic flow. The harmonies are lush and the textures simple and direct. The tonal center is A minor, but the music meanders through so many keys, that this key centre is heavily disguised. The finale is a fiery affair. G minor is really its home key, but throughout the movement the music moves about a lot and the second subject is first heard in A flat minor. The movement's underlying sonata structure is masked not only by its loose tonality but also by its frequently changing time signatures. Like the first movement the second subject is more lyrical in nature and for a while it seems that the music will end peacefully, but a final flurry heralds a triple forte unison on the home note of the first movement - B flat. £140.80Poem a la Carte - Manfred Schneider - Anton Weeren
As a French horn player, the successful German composer Manfred Schneider is familiar with brass instruments, so he took on the challenge of writing at a real Concerto for Trombone and Wind Band, which he called 'Poem a la carte'. The composition was commissioned by the JBK Sonthofen wind band. Though the 'misterioso' introduction already features some virtuoso passages for the soloist, the latter really takes off in the energetic allegro. Then comes a lyrical largo and the work ends with a sparkling allegro allowing the soloist to demonstrate true virtuosity.

Dual (for euphoniums and band) was commissioned by Robbert Vos and Anteun Hoesen of Altena Brass, the Netherlands. Pearce strived to write a fun, melodic and challenging piece that showed off the vast range and virtuosity of these fine players. The octatonic scale forms the harmonic basis for much of the piece, which is a musical competition or race between our mighty Euphonium soloists! Rapidly ascending and descending atonal lines create constant drama for both soloists and band, culminating in a more expressive and tonal ending.
