Dance On (Je me sens bien aupres de toi) - Adams, Murtagh, Murtagh & Stellman - Len Jenkins

"Dance On" is probably best remembered in the UK by two versions. One by the Shadows which went to Number 1 in the UK Singles chart and the other by Kathy Kirby which made number 11 in the 1963 UK charts. The other side of the Channel, in France, Petula Clark recorded the song in French ("Je me sens bien aupres de toi") and Italian ("Sto volentieri con te") which made the Top 5 of the French and Italian charts. She also recorded an English version for album release on the Canadian market. The infectious rhythm will get you tapping your feet or even getting up to dance. It's a real bopping number from the 60's, and well within the capabilities of most bands. Enjoy.

    The Adventurers - Martin Cordner

The Adventurers was commissioned by Hempstead Citadel Band (USA) for its anniversary celebrations in 2013. With a respectful nod to film music composers such as Broughton and Williams The Adventurers portrays, in an action movie style, the joys and challenges of the Christian journey. In three movements, it features familiar songs; He leadeth me! O blessed thought; By his hand (an acknowledgement to composer and songwriter Thomas Mack who is a long-serving member of Hempstead Citadel Band); and Lead me, lest I stray. The message of the music is clear: that in order for life to be lived as an adventure, it is best walked with and ed by Jesus Christ, the ultimate adventure-maker.

    Island Whirl - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Island Whirl was commissioned by Margaret Milligan who wanted a brand new piece of music composed as a present for Ian, her husband for his 70th birthday. Ian Milligan is a keen and dedicated musician and he is the musical director of Callendar Brass, based in Callendar near Stirling in Scotland.Margaret contacted me about the possibility of composing a short lively piece which had a Scottish theme that would be ideal for Callendar Brass Band and any other ensemble to get their teeth into. This piece takes its inspiration from the traditional Scottish folk song ‘An Eriskay Love Lilt’ which is a particular favourite of both Margaret and Ian.With thunderous Celtic drums the piece opens in a whirlwind of sound with fanfare brass and an off-stage soloist that can perform using either the cornet or trumpet. After the exciting opening, the brass and drums die away to allow the off-stage soloist to air the traditional tune ‘An Eriskay Love Lilt’.The beautiful haunting melody, keeping its originality throughout undergoes a series of changes in the accompanying harmonic material before dying away to allow the Celtic drums to return. The percussion whip the band into a frenzy as the piece gets faster and faster. Just prior to the final notes the band diminuendo to allow one last closing statement from the Eriskay Love Lilt lead by the off-stage soloist before the ensemble charge to a dramatic close. When performing this piece I would recommend the off-stage soloist taking a position somewhere in the audience, so they can almost feel part of the performance. In addition, with the two tom-tom parts that represent the Celtic drums, bands should make the most of showcasing them by getting the two drummers out to the front of the band to perform. The ideal stage position would be with the players set up in stereo with one player in front of the soprano cornet and the other in front of the solo trombone. With the various choreographed movements from both the off-stage soloist and the percussionists. This piece is a great addition to any concert repertoire and is an ideal showcase for bands who want to try something a little different.I wish Ian at 70 years young, all the very best with his music making in the many years to come and I hope this piece, composed especially for him and Callender Brass brings them many years of musical enjoyment.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

In Pitch Black - Lucy Pankhurst

The Music Company (UK) Ltd are delighted to announce that one of their key writers, Lucy Pankhurst, has been short-listed as one of the finalists for The British Composers Award 2011, a UK-wide competition designed to celebrate the finest composers living and working in the UK.Following their nomination of Lucy’s emotional and programmatic piece ‘In Pitch Black’, The Music Company (UK) Ltd shared in Lucy’s excitement when learning of her success in being selected as one of the three finalists in this extremely prestigious and demanding competition. The overall winner will be announced at a special awards ceremony due to take place at Stationer’s Hall, London on 30th November. On receiving the news, Lucy reacted enthusiastically “I was thrilled when the notification arrived. ‘In Pitch Black is a very special piece for me, especially because of my links with The Wingates Band who lost so many of its players in the mining disaster that was its inspiration. It gives me such pleasure knowing that the renowned members of the judging panel appreciate and understand what I was trying to depict through my writing – something which, as a composer, is always such a personal form of communication. It is huge honour to be made a finalist at this event and I’m really looking forward to attending the awards ceremony in November where I can meet so many of the UKs fine composers all under one roof.”Clair Tomalin, Business Director commented: “We are so pleased that Lucy has been given such prestigious recognition for her outstanding writing talent. This is a highly revered competition and to be selected as a finalist at this year’s event is an incredible achievement. As Lucy’s , we were proud to submit our nomination to the Brass Band/Wind Band category of her emotive brass band work ‘In Pitch Black’ written in tribute and memory of the tragic Pretoria Pit disaster of 1910. It’s a piece that clearly demonstrates her imaginative, colourful, sensitive and innovative musicianship as a composer which marks this historical tragedy with atmosphere, dignity, respect and hope. To have this remarkable piece short-listed at the British Composers Award 2011 is a significant stepping stone for Lucy, and we are extremely proud to be supporting her.”Lucy is already an award winning composer including the 26 RNCM Festival of Brass Young Composers Competition (for Ascension), Best New Composition at the 27 US Open (for Wicked), and more recently the John Golland Composers Award 2011 being presented to her earlier this year at the RNCM Festival of Brass for her work Alchemist’s Fire. She is the composer-in-residence for The Wingates Band and also an extremely accomplished tenor horn player. Her portfolio of composition and arranged works spreads from classical through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s to modern pop and on to a unique contemporary style, with an eclectic writing interest that includes brass band, instrumental works, wind band, saxaphone ensembles and even a piece featuring a steam train! She is much in demand for commissions and has offered many memorable performance works at numerous key brass band events.Andrew Duncan, The Music Company’s Editorial Director added: “We have always been impressed with the quality of Lucy’s writing and the exciting new avenues she explores both in her composition and arrangement of works. She fosters a fantastic angle on what she wants to convey through her music, establishing her own unique style and approach to each project. Being short-listed for this award offers Lucy deserved glory for her musical accomplishments and sits well to formally acknowledge her undoubted ability across the musical world”.Lucy is amongst impressive company with nominees in the other categories including musical comedian Tim Minchin (Stageworks category) and prestigious composer and author Tim Payne (Chamber category). Her co-finalists in the Wind Band/Brass Band category include Emily Howard (Brass Band work – Obsidian) and Tom Davoren (Wind Orchestra work – Looking In).The British Composers Awards 2011 is now in its ninth year, celebrating the music of composers living and working in the United Kingdom and offering 13 independent categories of composition genres. The event is presented by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), sponsored by PRS for Music and in association with BBC Radio 3 who will be providing exclusive broadcast coverage of the Awards, scheduled to be aired on 4th December 2011.

    Manhattan Spiritual - Tim Paton

I have arranged this incredibly memorable Big Band piece by Billy Maxted as a feature for the Timps and Kit, inspired by the man who made it famous, that spectacular drummer and showman – ERIC DELANEY -who, at the age of 83, is still performing in the UK and further afield. A book by Eddie Sammons about his astonishing career, including contributions from many famous artists and lots of amusing anecdotes, should be available in 27. The City of Lincoln Band inform me that this was one of their most popular items on their visit to Germany. The Timpani and Drum Kit parts will need good players. To get the best effect, a set of three timps is required, although an optional part for two timps is included. The timps and drums are coordinated, so the parts need to be played as written. For those bands with more than two percussionists, there is a third part, which, although optional, would certainly add to the overall effect. Although the Timp & Drum parts are technically demanding, the remainder of the parts are within the capability of most players.”I’m sure this item will be a huge success with popular light music audiences everywhere”.
