This unique arrangement by Fendall Hill of Away in a Manger brings together two beloved melodies of the cherished Christmas carol, seamlessly intertwining the popular American setting known as "Mueller" with the gentle strains of "Cradle Song", the tune favoured across Britain, Ireland, and the British Commonwealth. First introduced to American audiences by James R. Murray in Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses (1887), the Mueller melody - often mistakenly attributed to Martin Luther - has become the most recognised version of the carol in the United States. Complementing this is the lyrical Cradle Song, composed by William J. Kirkpatrick and published in Around the World with Christmas (1895), offering a tender counterpoint to Murray's setting. This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour. This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature showcasing the front row was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for brass bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright and Glenn Greet, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. This march was written to mark the centennial jubilee of the renowed Manger Musikklag. The title for the piece comes from the many descriptions of the county Manger Musikklag originates from, on the island of Radoy. As the composer writes, 'It is a uniquely lush and beautiful landscape, which is echoed on the famously green trimmed jackets worn by the band at concerts and competitions. Radoy is not without reason called "the green island". With regards to the composition, I have not tried to reinvent the idea of a march. But rather to present my own take on its familiar style. The piece is meant to have a reassuring familiarity about it, whilst the ending will surely make the audience smile.' This music was inspired by stories of those working in the dark and dangerous conditions of the coal mines, and particularly those hewers right at the coal face. Based around an original theme, the music captures a hymn-like setting of a miner's prayer for safety. Depictions of industry and difficult times follow, but resolve into a triumphant conclusion where dark imagery give way to light. The music is the composer's proud tribute to the industrial heritage of his forebears.
