Formed around a musical interpretation of the title, the motifs employed are derived from melodies and counterpoint that, with development, join into unisons but then separate. The music, which in places is reminiscent of the film music of Bernard Hermann, often takes the separating lines and transforms them into dramatic, often grotesque new material. Throughout, however, the original motif continues to make its presence felt, finally resolving into a massive unison scored for full band as the concluding note.

The music of Cityscapes intends to parallel the impressions, sights, and sounds of a modern city to what a painter might convey with a landscape portrait. 'Morning Scene - Awakening': the quiet solitude of a sunrise, birdsong, and empty streets can betray the crowded jungle of city life. These are the last moments of sleep before the alarm goes off and the coffee goes on. 'Faces in Motion': The pavements come alive, streets fill with cars, office buildings open, the rush hour is on - and everyone is late! 'Museum Visit': To step into a museum is to visit another world. Looking at what we've been and where we've been, there's always a sense of awe at how much has gone before; and the realisation of how much there is yet to come... 'Nightlife': After hours is not the time to slow down, for the city never really sleeps. Nightclubs open, and the jazz circuit is alive with swinging sounds. This is the soul of the city. (Steven Ponsford)This light-hearted, lively piece of music is based on David Fellingham's song 'Shout for joy and sing your praises to the King'.No. 1281 (1) Sweet hour of prayer (trs. Doug Engle)Prayer offers us an opportunity to communicate with the Lord. The words of this hymn invite us to bring our concerns to a God who listens. As you listen to this arrangement, take time to reflect on how God has remained faithful through times of peace and distress.No. 1281 (2) The Lord bless you and keep you (arr. Andrew Wainwright)Peter Lutkin's beloved choral benediction is well known in vocal circles. Here it is given a simple treatment that it is hoped will inspire prayer reflection and renewed confidence in God's protection and guidance.No. 1282 March - I serve a risen Saviour (Noel Jones)This Easter march features the following songs: 'Look, ye saints! the sight is glorious' and 'I serve a risen Saviour'. (Andrew Blyth)This solo features the popular song by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty entitled 'Power of the Cross', along with an original song by the composer, 'The Cross of hope'. It was originally written at the request of Staff Bandsman Gerry Todd and the Melbourne Staff Band.No.2155 Mission Force (Stephen Bulla)This is programmatic music, portraying the determination and forward vision of the modern church's mission. It includes two well-known hymns, 'Trentham' (T.B.159) and 'Slane' (T.B.831), using their words as metaphors that describe this quest into a spiritual future.No.2156 Prelude on 'Lavenham' (Geoffrey Nobes)An arrangement of a hymn, written by the composer with words by Reverend Nick Fawcett. The three statements of the melody correspond to three verses of the hymn and seek to reflect their meaning.No. 2157 On we march (Kevin Larsson)This piece was written for the Pasadena Tabernacle Band for their 120th anniversary. It includes a number of tunes closely connected with the Corps including 'Everything's coming up roses' from Gypsy, a song closely associated with the Rose Parade, and 'Hooray for Hollywood' as the Corps was previously called Hollywood Tabernacle. Continuing on the Rose Parade theme, 'On we march' (T.B.788) and the well-known hymn tune, 'Rachie' (T.B.190), are also featured.
