Many of his ideas are contained in sketchbooks and Philip Wilby's work takes a sequence of these as a springboard. They traqnslate his visual studies into purely musical terms, and transform their images, tubulent or intimate, mechanistic or heraldic by turns, into a composition which draws its energy from Leonardo's great example. An abridged version of the work - Turba - is also available.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a British composer, who, from a young age, showed talent on the violin and entered the Royal College of Music, studying with Charles Villers Standford. His music become so popular that his Hiawatha trilogy was the second most performed choral piece (joint with Mendelssohn's Elijah, and only beaten by Handel's Messiah) with choral societies up and down the British Isles. In fact, Hiawatha was arranged by Charles Godfrey as a test-piece for the 1902 National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, held at Crystal Palace.Commissioned by the theatre impresario Herbert Beerbohm, Coleridge-Taylor composed incidental music for His Majesty's Theatre London production of the Shakespeare play, Othello, in the West End, in 1909. In 1912, the play opened to the public, with a suite of five movements put together soon afterwards. The Dance, arranged here by Rob Bushnell, makes a great concert opener.This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. A tone poem in one movement. This work from the American composer, Steven Reineke tells the story of the lives of Helena and Sibylla, twin sisters born in Germany in 1588. The sisters were separated at an early age, and one became a witch, and the other became a saint. The composer uses many various musical variations to illustrate the turbulent life of the sisters. This is one of Steven Reineke's most famous works and has now been arranged by Erik Rozendom.

This symphony for brass band seeks to explore the thought that 'the greatest need of any congregation is its pastor's personal holiness'. The first movement challenges the pastor 'to serve the present age', the tunes 'Majesty' and 'Lathbury' are used. The second movement expresses a priority to 'Seek...first the Kingdom of God'. The short third movement presents the question 'Except I am moved with compassion, how dwellest they Spirit in me?' before the triumphant finale reflects the desire of every Christian that his life and work will always be for the glory of God with the presentation of 'In my life Lord, be glorified'.

When a Knight Won His Spurs - Traditional - Thomas, B
Many people of a certain age will be familiar with When a Knight won his Spurs. A God-fearing Knight battling fearsome dragons and ogres really sticks in the memory, along with the fabulous folk tune.Prefaced by a mysterious opening derived from the melody itself, the tune appears a further three times, linked by a glittering fanfare. The folk feel of the original tune has been retained, and the piece drives along using a dual 3/4 - 6/8 time signature. The first statement of the tune is a conventional harmonisation; the second statement uses more colourful harmonies, and the triumphal final statement follows a dramatic upward key change. Three minutes in length makes it an ideal opener.2nd section +
