Legacy of Light was commissioned by the family of Howard Bland, Honorary Secretary of Wessex Band Summer School for many years. Rather than a work in a reflective style, the brief was to provide a work which celebrated his life - energy and music which would be fun to perform and listen to. The bubbling compound time signature combined with the cornet and tuned percussion ostinato to open provide immediate impact with the work's subsequent soaring melodies and joyous style a fitting tribute. The work received its world premiere by the joint forces of the brass and wind bands at the 2024 Wessex Band Summer School, conducted by Michael Fowles.

At The Going Down Of The Sun is a deeply moving musical tribute dedicated to the courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of those who have defended the nation of Australia. Inspired by the heroic legacy of the 2/25th Battalion and their storied defense of the Kokoda Track during World War II, this composition serves as a solemn reminder of the immense gratitude owed to its fallen heroes. This piece is born from a legacy of service. It was composed in honor of Keith Fitzpatrick, who enlisted in the AIF on November 28, 1941. Keith served two tours in New Guinea, spending 359 days on the treacherous Kokoda Track. Keith Fitzpatrick lived to celebrate his 100th birthday in 2023, leaving behind a profound legacy through his wife of 67 years, Valda, and three generations of descendants. At The Going Down Of The Sun captures this spirit of endurance and devotion. This powerful and evocative work by Australian-New Zealand composer Fendall Hill pays tribute to the ANZAC soldiers who passed through Weymouth, Dorset during World War I. Inspired by first-hand accounts, the piece follows the emotional journey of a young soldier - from eager enlistment, through the harrowing Gallipoli campaign, to recovery and reflection in Weymouth. Structured in four movements, the music captures anticipation, fear, fierce resistance, and eventual healing, culminating in a moment of remembrance. The hymn tune Wareham -written by Dorset composer William Knapp - features prominently as a thematic thread, honouring the region's historical connection to the ANZAC legacy. A deeply moving addition to the brass band repertoire, this work is both a musical narrative and a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to the people of Dorset for their care and ongoing commemoration of the ANZACs. Enduring Faith was commissioned by Christopher Ward and the Five Lakes Silver Band and is a lyrical work for brass band that explores the intersection of hope, resilience, and conviction. Designed with a focus on melodic clarity and expressive phrasing, the composition moves through a series of nuanced emotional shifts - ranging from quiet, reflective passages to moments of expansive lyricism and affirmation. The harmonic structure travels through several keys, serving as a musical metaphor for the changing seasons of life. Throughout the piece, the texture is enriched by featured soloists from across the ensemble, including flugel horn, cornet, euphonium, baritone, and trombone. This work is dedicated to Doug and Stephanie Bayne, long-standing members of the Five Lakes Silver Band, in recognition of their commitment to their community and their steadfast support of the ensemble. The Keystone Kops was a series of silent comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the 1912 film Hoffmeyer's Legacy but it was the 1913 feature The Bangville Police that confirmed their popularity. The Keystone Kops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly with a great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a major lack of coordination. DEEP HARMONY (Brass Band Set) - Stuart Pullin
