Stealing Apples - Fats Waller - Reid Gilje
"Stealing Apples" is an old swing-tune written by Fats Waller. Performances by Benny Goodman and his big band made the song very popular.In this arrangement for brass band, the mallet percussion is very essential. Mallet Percussion presents the melody from letter A and is also featured as soli-instruments from letter L to P. These parts can alternatively be played as vibraphone solo.Please be aware of the balance at letter A. Horn and Trombones must play piano but well articulated. Letter D must sound sparkling and fresh with articulated and powerful trombones and cornets (using straight-mute).Make shue that the 8th-notes are not played too dotted two bars before letter G. Almost even 8th-notes accentuated on the start of the slur is a good tip.Watch the balance at letter H. This part have to sound homogeniously.The soloistic Soprano Cornet at letter Q must be played in the style of Benny Goodan. The accompaniment must not be too powerful from letter R to S. The most beautiful thing is one of Jahn Teigens most popular pop ballads.It was written in 1988 together with Rolf Lovland and Ove Borochstein and went straight to the top of the Norwegian hitlists. Even 20 years after its release, in 2008, it reached the hitlists after Teigen performed it during the Eurovision Song Contest. The song is often played on Norwegian radio and was the 70th most played in the period 1993-2013 on the radio channel P4.Now it's finally arranged for band in the popular Young Band series with adaptation of key that fit young musicians. It will definitely be a popular number in your next concert.

Savoy Christmas Medley - Traditional - Len Jenkins based on an original arrangement by Debroy Somers
The Savoy Christmas Medley is a well-known and often played piece originally arranged from traditional music by Debroy Somers a big-band bandleader in the 1920's. William Henry (Debroy) Somers was an ex-army bandmaster who formed the Savoy Orpheans dance band, resident at the famous Savoy Hotel between 1923 and 1927. Whilst there are several editions of this music for full Brass Band, this latest arrangement has been tailored to suit a brass quintet with optional percussion. In many cases the availability of players around the festive season, or the space to accommodate a full band in some of the venues for Christmas engagements or for fundraising, means that a Quintet can be the preferred option. In order to achieve a good Quintet arrangement, it is necessary to achieve the same quality and diversity of sound as a full band but within a smaller group. A challenging objective which we believe has been achieved in this publication. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments.

Nearer, My God, To Thee (Bra) - Lowell Mason & James L. Stevens - Mike Kilmartin
"Nearer, My God, to Thee" is a 19th-century Christian hymn which retells a story from 'Genesis': "So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it..."The hymn was also used by other composers like Carl Nielsen and Charles Ives, and was played by the string ensemble on the movie 'Titanic' when the vessel sank.This arrangement is based on the beautiful BYO choir version and Mike Kilmartin did a great job making a lovely band version of it.

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is a very cool and laid back piece written by Joe Zawinul in 1966 for Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Zawinul played an important role in the development of the jazz rock, along with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin and Miles Davis. Zawinul was best known as the founder of the American jazz fusion band "Weather Report". He was one of the first musicians who used electric pianos and early synthesizers in jazz.

Schiller's text of 1785 was partially used by Beethoven in1824 when he did finish the 4th movement of his 9th Symphony. The melody has later been used in very many contexts. As the anthem of the European Union, a lot of movies (A clockwork Orange, Die Hard, etc.), music to video games, as the anthem of Rhodesia, as rebel song in Chile and by FIFA. Therefore, it can be used in most settingsThis Young Band arrangement focuses on the main melody. In the original, the B part is repeated in each variation, but to get three variations (out of four), this repetition has been cut. The first variation should be played as soft as possible, but still with a nice sound. Crescendo to forte (f) and going back to pp should be as a surprise.

The New Orleans Brass Band sound is now something that is heard and seen throughout the world. Originally repertoire was played to serve civic & church duties and was often spiritual in content mixed with more than a hint of jazz. These days, almost 'anything goes' with music arranged and composed for the idiom. Despite this, many 'staple' musical characteristics prevail - a hint of the blues in melody & harmony and a funky, swinging rhythmic drive for both dancing and marching. Barking Mad uses these ingredients to present a brassy, shackles off, in-yer-face musical number.

Foyle's War Theme - Jim Parker - Len Jenkins
Foyle's War was a TV crime drama created by screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, and tells the story of Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, played by Michael Kitchen, fighting a personal war against crime amidst the turmoil of World War Two. The music for the series was composed by 4 time BAFTA winning Jim Parker and has an ethereal minor key melody, sparsely orchestrated and Wobbleco Music has attempted to capture this atmosphere in its arrangement for Brass Band. An arrangement for a Brass Ensemble is also available. The last episode of the Foyle's War was written in 2014 but such is its popularity that there have been many requests for it to return to the screens, particularly as the writer says that one of the wartime years has yet to be covered. We shall see. Meantime enjoy this beautiful theme.
