A Century of Art (Brass Band) Robbert Vos

A Century of Art was composed for Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht from the town of De Goorn (The Netherlands) for its 100th anniversary in 2022. A version for Fanfare Orchestra was commissioned by the Fanfare Project Orchestra in 2023. The title of the work refers to Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht's 100-year existence and the array of art that has been created in that time. A Century of is a flashy and virtuosic opening work where melodic lines are combined with other surprising compositional elements. You can hear, among some references to some famous brass band test pieces, a quote from Lohengrin by Richard Strauss. A transcription of Lohengrin was used at the 1922 British Open in England, one of the most famous brass band competitions in the world, the same year as Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht was founded. Allegro Spirito from Symphony No.2 (Brass Band) Borodin arr. Harold Burgmayer

Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony in B minor dates from the years 1869-76, a time when he was also working on his enduring opera Prince Igor. Flavors of the exotic and outdoor celebration seemed to have spilled over from the opera in this brilliant sonata movement. Borodin seldom quotes Russian folk tunes, but his graceful melodic lines are permeated with the spirit of his native song, supported by iridescent harmonies and bright colors. This arrangement for brass band was premiered by The Salvation Army's New York Staff Band, with Ronald Waiksnoris conducting, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on 11 April 2001. This complete transcription of the Finale movement of Borodin's Second Symphony has an approximate duration of 6.40 minutes. To alternatively utilize the piece as an opener, a cut from bar 173 to 272 is indicated with Coda signs, reducing the piece to 4.30 seconds. Cofio Aberfan (Brass Band) Alex Scaife McGee

Cofio Aberfan (Remembering Aberfan) is a deeply moving musical work composed to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Aberfan disaster. On that tragic day, a collapsing coal tip devastated a close-knit Welsh village, claiming 144 lives - including 116 children attending their final day of term at Pant Glas Primary School. Do you Recall? (Trombone Solo with Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

A slow, bluesy solo for trombone with band accompaniment. Composer Rob Wiffin wrote this piece after sorting through old paperwork during the Covid lockdown of Spring 2020, rediscovering songs from years earlier that had been written with just melody and chord symbols. 'Do you Recall?' developed from one such song into a trombone solo, and has since proved popular with trombonists, having already been recorded by Brett Baker. It is not intrinsically difficult but calls for an appropriate slow swing style and good control throughout the range. Ever since the first performance in April 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah has been the iconic Christian oratorio. It is a work of genius with lyrics skillfully taken from the Bible by Charles Jennens and timeless music by G. F. Handel, and has been at the top of the Western musical canon for close to 300 years. For unto us a child is born comes roughly halfway through Part One of the oratorio and is one of its most popular choruses, being the prophecy of the birth of a Messiah (Jesus) found in Isaiah chapter nine. Swinging all the way (Brass Band) Dave Collins

Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end.
