Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' was written for the inaugural Texas Brass Fest, held at Round Top Festival Institute on 27 May 2023, for the four premier brass bands in Texas - Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio Brass Bands. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church by Charles Wesley, which is also known as 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing', the first verse of which reads: O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! For maximum effect it is suggested that cornets and trombones are staged stood around the band, although if this is not possible then traditional band formation will be acceptable. This piece was written as a full length virtuosic solo based on an earlier work called Humble Hero, which is also available from BrookWright Music. It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Land given to God (Tuku Fonua ki Langi) is a landmark major test-piece for brass band celebrating Tongan faith, history, and cultural identity. Commissioned by Sione Malekamu Manu Jr for the Tonga Secondary School Music Festival, Land given to God marks a monumental achievement in Pacific music literature as the first major brass band test-piece written specifically for the Kingdom of Tonga. Commemorating two centuries of Christianity, this compelling four-movement work traces Tonga's journey from ancient traditions to its historic 1839 dedication to divine protection. The piece draws its principal thematic material from the beloved Tongan hymn Oku 'iai ha ki'i fonua 'oku tu'u 'i 'oseni. The work is divided into four through-composed movements: I. Koe Lotu Mu'a (The Old Religion): Grounded and ritualistic, this movement paints the ancient spiritual order of pre-Christian Tonga - a nation anchored in sacred ancestral tradition on the threshold of change. II. Koe Lotu Fo'ou (The New Religion): Captures a nation in transition, depicting the arrival of Wesleyan missionaries, the conversion of Taufa'ahau (King Siaosi Tupou I), and the powerful 1834 spiritual revival (To 'a e 'Ofa). III. Koe Sivi Fakaosi (The Final Test): A dramatic musical confrontation between doubt and conviction. It recounts the story of Christian teacher Pita Vi being cast into shark-infested waters as a test of faith, surviving unharmed to seal the King's devotion. IV. Koe Tuku Fonua ki Langi (Land Given to God): A solemn, declarative finale recounting the historic 1839 act at Pouono, where King Siaosi Tupou I offered the land and people of Tonga to the divine protection of Heaven.
