One of the composer's most personal works, Genesis is cast in three independent movements but played in close (attacca) proximity to each other. Part One: Out of Darkness... quotes the German chorale Nun Danket (Now thank we all our God) text by Martin Rinkart (1586-1649) and the music by Johann Cruger (1598-1662) in a symbolic, somewhat cynical, style. Part Two: Les Chansons du Monde... (the songs of the earth or earth-songs) is composed with full attention to solo, duo and other combinations of instruments consistently in a cantabile style. Part Three: Into Light... concentrates on rhythmic agility and dance like qualities in a most exuberant fashion, bringing the work to a very positive conclusion. Duration: 14.45

In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth -- inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love -- and also tension and the worries -- in the adult-child bond, through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. In that memorable battle Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, defeated Count Varax, a general of the Spanish army - with a considerably smaller troop than the enemy. A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and PercussionLandscapes is a work structured around two main ideas. On the one hand, the music freely paints some of the superb landscapes I've seen during several of my trips around the world. Listeners should, however, not be influenced by this programmatic framework and are encouraged to build their own 'mind pictures'. On the other hand, Landscapes constitutes a test piece for each section of the brass band. Indeed, each musical landscape highlights a particular register. A small group of soloists is given the opportunity to fully display its skills in dialogue with the rest of the band (the tutti), hence the name 'concerto grosso'. Landscapes also relies on the band's different soloist musicians when it comes to express highly complex, musically and technically challenging passages.

At 8.00pm on the 22nd of October 1707, the Association, flagship of the Royal Navy, struck rocks off the Scilly Isles with the loss of the entire crew. Throughout the rest of the evening the remaining three ships in the fleet suffered the same fate. Only 26 of the original 1,647 crew members survived. This disaster was a direct result of an inability to calculate longitude, the most pressing scientific problem of the time. It pushed the longitude question to the forefront of the national consciousness and precipitated the Longitude Act. Parliament funded a prize of �20,000 to anyone whose method or device would solve the dilemma.For carpenter and self-taught clockmaker John Harrison, this was the beginning of a 40 year obsession. To calculate longitude it is necessary to know the time aboard ship and at the home port or place of known longitude, at precisely the same moment. Harrison's dream was to build a clock so accurate that this calculation could be made, an audacious feat of engineering.This work reflects on aspects of this epic tale, brilliantly brought to life in Dava Sobel's book Longitude. Much of the music is mechanistic in tone and is constructed along precise mathematical and metrical lines. The heart of the work however is human - the attraction of the �20,000 prize is often cited as Harrison's motivation. However, the realisation that countless lives depended on a solution was one which haunted Harrison. This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a special atmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major concert work for advanced bands.Duration: 15:00
