In 1956 Sir Kenneth MacMillan created a one-act ballet for the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, London. He selected the music from the two sets of English Dances which Sir Malcolm Arnold had written in 1950 and 1951 to great acclaim. The composer wrote two new dances, a Sarabande and a Polka, especially for the ballet, which was premiered at Sadler's Wells Theatre in June 1956. The two new dances have taken on a life of their own in the concert hall and are typical Arnold: the Sarabande contains one of his most memorable melodies and the Polka shows him at his quirky, tongue-in-cheek best.

Valdres is a mountain region that lies between Oslo and Bergen. Johannes Hanssen (1874-1967) composed the march for the Valdres Battalion between 1901 and 1904, using the Battalions horn-signal combined with a traditional style folk-tune. The march has been named "one of the greatest marches in the world" on many occasions, and it is a firm favourite with it's national flavor and unusual style. This version is similar to Johannes Hanssens revised version for Wind Band from 1954. However, it is interesting to notice that in Hanssens very first version of the march half a century earlier, the first theme was played by the Eb-Cornet, just like in this arrangement for brassband.

The Mexican songwriter Maria Grever, wrote the melody in 1934 ("Cuando vuelva a tu lado") and it became a big hit for jazz-singer Diana Washington. Since that, it has been recognized as a jazz-standard and also featured in several movies. This arrangement was originally written for young, Norwegian singer Angelina Jordan. In this version, the level of difficulty and instrumentation are customized to fit our Young Band-series. Included in the set is parts for both string bass and vocals, but they are not compulsory to perform the piece. In this style, the accompaniment will have a slight swinging feel, while some of the contrasting elements has to be performed without swing(Even).

Walt Disney Pictures movie Vaiana from 2016 tells the story of Vaiana, the strong-willed daughter of the master in a Polynesian tribe. She is elected by the sea to reunite a mysterious relic with a goddess. When a disease affects the island she lives on, Vaiana set sails searching for Maui, a legendary demigod. Her goal is to save her people. The great theme song from the movie, How far I'll go, is magnificent and original and has elements of folk music. The song is nominated for Oscar in the Best original song-category. The modulation in this arrangement is re-written a semitone to make it fit our Young Band Entertainment-series.

Dag Wiren (1905 1986) studied organ and composition at the College of Music in Stockholm 1926 1931, and lived in Paris 1931 1934, where he continued his studies in composition and instrumentation. His list of works comprises mainly instrumentalmusic, such as five symphonies, five string quartets, several overtures and quite a lot of music for film and theatre. Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 11, was premiered by Stockholm Chamber Orchestra under Tobias Wilhemi, in October 1937,and was an immediate success. The Serenade has four movements, and the finishing Marcia has gained great popularity, especially after it was theme tune for the television series Monitor, which wasaired 1958 1965.

David Raksin was active in the music business for so many decades that he was thought by many to be the Grandfather of film music. Malcolm Arnold is one Britain's best-loved composers. In 1948 he composed a very short suite for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - entitled simply To Youth. Seven years later he took To Youth and made some fairly major revisions, including a complete new movement, and the Little Suite for Orchestra was born. The Little Suite for Orchestra follows a very similar pattern to the later suites for brass band, starting with a bold, strident Prelude, which strangely ends quietly before a lovely, lilting, Dance composed in 3/8 time. Finally a rollicking and militaristic March brings the suite to a conclusion. This arrangement for brass band by Robin Norman is sure tobecome a classic in the brass band repertoire.
