Heroes of the North was commissioned by Henning Annundsen for Skodvin Skulemusikk and pays tribute to the development of brass band activity in the Nordhordland region of Norway.The music is a set of character variations based upon personalities long associated with both the band and the region. The opening 5 note motif (C D E F G) might be considered the starting point for beginner brass students, and this mini-theme is developed throughout the work.Five variations follow: Mr Brevik's Galop (representing Tom Brevik, a key figure in Norwegian brass band music); Frode's Dance (with apologies to Edvard Grieg), portraying soprano cornet player Frode Rydland, one of Skodvin Skulemusikk's most famous "old boys"; Mr Bjrge's Walk representing Viggo Bjrge, "Mr Eikanger Bjrsvik Band"; Hymn for Knut-Harald, known as "Mr Skodvin Skulemusikk" having over many years played a central role in the teaching and training of the band, and finally Maestro Snell's Russian Adventure features music with more than a hint of Russian (Khachaturian to be precise) and calls to mind Howard Snell whose arrangements and presence have made such a huge contribution to Norwegian Brass Banding over many years.Heroes of the North is playable by 4th section bands.Duration: 10.00

Song of India (or more accurately the 'Song of the Hindu'), from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera-bilina Sadko, provides a technical challenge as well as a musical one, requiring a great degree of control and accurate intonation as the subtly varied chromatic phrases weave their way over a gently undulating, almost hypnotic accompaniment. The Piano Accompaniment verion has been set for Trinity College music exams for 2019-22 (Grade 5), so this brass band version is the ideal opportunity to give young soloists experience with their band.

We imagine them in the fields, one by one coming to life and joining in an extraordinary and chaotic dance); Sweetheart Abbey (Inspired by the ruined abbey near Dumfries founded by Dervorguilla of Galloway, in memory of her husband. After his death, she kept his embalmed heart with her for the rest of her life and it was buried alongside her when she died); Clanjamfrie (A drunken rabble meet in a remote Highland pub and proceed to talk nonsense and dance the night away). Part Two: Les Chansons du Monde... (the songs of the earth or earth-songs) is composed with full attention to solo, duo and other combinations of instruments consistently in a cantabile style. Part Three: Into Light... concentrates on rhythmic agility and dance like qualities in a most exuberant fashion, bringing the work to a very positive conclusion. Duration: 14.45
