91. Concerto for Euphonium - Kenneth Downie
Price: £37.41
By Kenneth Downie. Solo. For Euphonium and Brass Band. Approachable showcase for the euphonium. Light Concert. Advanced. Full Score. Standard Notation. Duration 13:30. Published by Winwood Music (WO.0248SC).
With Standard Notation. Light Concert.
An accessible and enjoyable showpiece for soloists of all ages. The concerto's three movements are in a tuneful, melodic style and bravura passages are mixed with others designed to exploit the singing qualities of the instrument. The first movement is a vigorous allegro in which the short, pithy motifs of the opening theme contrast with the broad sweep of the second subject. A short cadenza-like passage yields to a high-spirited episode before a reprise of the opening ends the movement quietly. The second movement opens with a warm, romantic melody which is soon taken up by the soloist. A short animated section gives way to the earlier tutti theme, this time with passionate decoration from the soloist before the music gently unwinds in a tranquil coda. The finale has a bouncy, festive feel. After the first subject runs its course there is a brief journey through a more contrapuntal style, before a spirited presto moves into a compound episode before returning to the opening idea. A jubilant coda brings the work to a conclusion.

93. Concerto for Euphonium - Kenneth Downie
Price: £70.00
Concerto for Euphonium was commissioned by Doyen Recordings Ltd. for Robert Childs and Black Dyke Band and was first performed by them at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass in February 2000.The Concerto is sub-titled 'Eulogy', in the sense of 'in praise of' or 'in appreciation of', intending to draw attention to both the lyrical and dramatic qualities of the euphonium. The three movements are in a tuneful, melodic style and bravura passages are mixed with others designed to exploit the singing qualities of the instrument.I: A vigorous allegro in which the short, pithy motifs of the opening theme contrast with the broad sweep of the second subject - its accompaniment formed from a gentle transformation of the earlier theme. A short cadenza-like passage yields to a high-spirited episode before a reprise of the opening ends quietly.II: Opening with a warm, romantic melody which is soon taken up by the soloist. A short animated section gives way to the earlier tutti theme, this time with passionate decoration from the soloist before the music gently unwinds in a tranquil coda.III: The finale has a bouncy, festive feel from the outset. After the first subject runs its course there is a brief journey through a more contrapuntal style, via an ostinato to a spirited presto which in turn moves into a compound episode before returning to the opening idea. The soloist is called upon to perform a few more 'fireworks' before the jubilant coda brings the work to a conclusion.

By Graham Cole. For brass band. Faber Brass Band Series. Selected as the test piece for the 2009 National Brass Band Championships, First Section. Score and parts. Published by Faber Music (AP.12-0571569498).
Pentacle has been selected as the test piece for the 2009 National Brass Band Championships, First Section. It is a five-movement work, played without a break. The Pentacle is an image of an up-right five-pointed star drawn inside a circle with a single continuous line making the five points equally spaced. Traditionally, each of the five angles has been attributed to the five metaphysical elements of the ancients. These provide the titles for the five sections of the piece: Earth (representing stability and physical endurance), Wind (representing intelligence and the arts), Fire (representing courage and daring), Water (representing emotions and intuition) and Quintessence (which represents the All and the Divine spirit).Composer Graham Cole started his brass band career with the Drighlington Band, playing principal horn until 2001, since when he has devoted more time to composing and teaching. A number of his original compositions and arrangements have been performed by leading bands in his native West Yorkshire including the Hepworth Lanson Homes Brass Band and Drighlington Brass Band. His Brass Quintet No.2 was performed by Fine Arts Brass in 2004. Graham was the winner of the Clocktower Composition Competition in 2005 with his work The Seven Wonders of the World. The winning performance was given by the Lindley Brass Band.

It does not attempt to be descriptive of Blenheim but rather strives to capture the spirit of the Bristish band enthusiasts who have challenged out musical imaginations and dedication to music-making. A stunning, perfectly-formed, concert opener which gives players and audiences much to enjoy.

For centuries hilltop beacon fires blazed across the land signals of important happenings or warnings of invasion. This music tells no specific story but the titles of the four thematically related sections are a guide to the idea: The Beacons; Far Horizons; The Invaders; Celebration. The first movement has something of the character of the march and the fanfare; spirited and tightly driving, it promises most of the thematic material of the work. The second is largelt tranquil and is thinly scores with solo passages. The third has the most dramatic potential; its energy and conflict subsides to a lament and a tolling bell before a vigorous rounding off. Appropriately, the fourth movement is in a merry-making mood, and the jubilant music concludes with fragment statements of the main themes. The Beacons was first performed by IMI Yorkshire Imperial Band (James Scott) at the 'Concert of the Century', celebrating the Centenary of the British Bandsman, at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, on 5 September 1987.

At a time when we are being encouraged to survey the recent past, its title aims to catch a flavour of that spirit of optimistic vision which coloured the British psyche at the end of the Second War, at once heroic, elegiac, and confident. The concerto's three movements are arranged in a circular pattern around a reflective slow movement. At the heart of that movement is a Cadenza, marked to be played off-stage, where the soloist is surrounded and supported by an additional group of fanfare players. By contrast, the outer movements are energetic and brisk, at times heroic, and at times virtuosic.
