2016 National Championships Regional Testpiece - 3rd Section.The novels by Jules Verne have been a rich source of inspiration for composers over the years. Graham has taken elements of the epic work Around the World in Eighty Days as the outline for a series of adventures recorded in an imaginary diary by the hero of the story, Phileas Fogg.Commencing with London bells in the background, the ensuing journey takes our hero by boat train to Paris (passing the Moulin Rouge en route), Russia (where he is chased by Cossacks), Vienna at night, Spain (where he is a spectator at a bull fight) before a final circumnavigation by sea (where we hear hints of foreign lands) brings him back to London with rich memories of his trip.The Journal of Phileas Fogg was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain and was first performed by them in July 2012, conducted by Dr Robert Childs.

A spotlight composition from Lucy Pankhurst for baritone soloist with brass accompaniment.Opening with a rich combination of melody and harmony, the resulting sound draws in the audience with its beauty. The sounds grow and the accompaniment starts to introduce moments of extra rhythmic interest. This then progresses into a more playful section where the melody line is developed further. Franco Cesarini was commissioned to write A Glorious Fanfare by the Band Association of the Zug Canton in Switzerland (Zuger Blasmusikverband), to celebrate the centenary of the Association (1922-2022).The composition is the third in a trilogy of scintillating concert opening pieces (which make up opus 38), together with A Triumphant Fanfare and A Joyful Fanfare. A majestic fanfare entrusted to the trumpets introduces the piece. Henry Purcell (1658 1695) is generally considered as one of the greatest English composers. He incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements into his compositions and made uniquely English baroque music. He has a rich production as composer, with works for orchestra, church, scene and vocal. In 1692, three years before his dead, he composed music to The Fairy Queen, who is a masque or semi opera who is a revised version of William Shakespeare's wedding comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream. This arrangement of Symphony is the overture to act number four.
