Andante Cantabile (from the String Quartet No. 1 in D major) - Tchaikovsky - Barry Strickle
The string quartet No.1 in D Maj was the first of three composed by Tchaikovsky. The melancholic Andante cantabile movement of the quartet has become famous, and was founded on a folk-song the composer heard whistled by a house painter. When the quartet was performed at a tribute concert to Leo Tolstoy, the author was said to have been brought to tears by this movement. Now arranged by Barry Strickle for full Brass Band, this is a perfect piece for any occasion or concert.

Although not much is known about this Scottish folksong (also called "Wi' A Hundred Pipers"), this is certainly a lively piece and is to be enjoyed as much by the band playing it as the audience listening to it.

The title of this clever arrangement reveals the Christmas song it is based on. The melody can be traced back to a French folksong from the 18th century which is now known around the world. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes, in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High. I Wonder As I Wander (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Blyth, Andrew
I wonder as I wander' was originally collected from North Carolina by the leading folksong collector, John Jacob Niles. It is said that he paid a young travelling evangelist, Annie Morgan, 25 cents an hour to sing the song until he had memorised it! Often referred to as a traditional Appalachian carol, it is unclear exactly how old the melody is.

Bulgarian folk music has a long tradition and numerous typical characteristics, such as particular dissonances and complex, irregular rhythms. In Bulgarian Dances (Part II) (which can be performed together with the previously published title Bulgarian Dances) Franco Cesarini has preserved the original spirit of Bulgarian folk music, yet has imbued it with a symphonic character and brought it into the concert hall. The three different movements give us a meditative, moving folksong and a lively dance, before a distinctly symphonic part leads to a glittering finale.
