  • Rhapsody on Es Ist Ein Ros' Entsprungen for Brass Band, Choir and Solo Soprano - Mike Lyons

This is one of my favourite tunes and the music describes not just the lyrics, but the meanin behind those lyrics. In the opening section, the rose is putting forth tendrils, despite the chilly winter air, springing forth to eventually produce the deep red bud of the flower. This is where the soprano enters, singing the original German lyrics. The band parts continue their sinuous growing, often threatened by the cold, hostile winter, before finally providing enough energy for the bud to blossom. The underlying meaning of these words is the flowering of a) Christ on the cross (hence the bleakness of the sounds) and b) Christianity across the world. The final glorious verse in English with the full choir and fanfares from the band celebrates the true meaning of Christmas.
The mp3 has an artificial voice and no choir.

SONG OF FREEDOM (Brass Band Parts only) - Arnold, Malcolm

Brass Band Parts only. Score and Children's Voices SA parts available separately. Op.109 Song of Freedom was commissioned by the National School Brass Band Association to commemorate the Association's 21st Anniversary. The first performance was given on 12th May 1973 at the Harlow Sportscentre by the Netteswell School Band and Choir, conducted on that occasion by the composer. The idea sprang out of a desire by the N.S.B.B.A. to mark it's 'coming of age' by bringing into being a work for chorus and Brass Band which was within the scope of an average School Band and Choir. The four movements are: Prelude; Hymn; Intermezzo; Postlude. Duration: 19:00

Ballet for Band - Score & Parts - Joseph Horovitz

Ballet for Band was written as the test-piece for the Championship section finals of the National Brass Band Championships, held at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1983.Although the work is not programmatic, within the space of ten minutes, the composer uses a form which might be considered to be the form of a ballet. Therefore there is a fanfare at the beginning which might be the overture, different characters appear, and scenes are quite clearly marked by, for instance, baritones or by muted trombone, although the listener is encouraged to use his own imagination.Thematically the work is tightly controlled, with the same material re-appearing in many different guises, as a flugel horn solo, as a waltz on the horns, and on the euphonium. Horovitz employs a rich harmonic pallet, but the work is most definitely rooted in a tonal language, with hints of Straussian richness later in the work. The work is notable for its middle section, in which the music gets slower and slower, providing a real test of control throughout the band.Ballet for Band was by no means Joseph Horovitz’s first work for the medium: his fine “Concerto for Euphonium and Band” is frequently played, and he has also written a cantata entitled “Samson” for choir and band.
