Commissioned by The City of Hull Band for their 2019 Brass In Concert programme, this evocative cornet and euphonium duet pays tribute to the trawlermen who lost their lives in three tragedies that took place in early 1968. The work comprises of two seafaring hymns, "Eternal Father Strong to Save" and "Nearer My God to Thee", using the tunes they are most commonly sung to in the 21st. The title of the work was inspired by the Hull seaman's mission, who in their literature describe themselves as an 'anchor for the soul' of the Humber shipping crews and their families.

This exciting new 22-minute concert suite for Brass Sextet has been composed during the months of lockdown charting the feelings of a nation, with seven movements playable by 6 (or more) players. The music was composed with the intention for players to perform either together live in a small group, in isolation by way of a virtual performance (downloadable backing tracks are available to play along to) and ultimately, to give players something to enjoy as we all miss our brass band families. This concert suite is the perfect addition to all bands' libraries at a time when rehearsals are limited. With catchy melodies and harmonies, it is an effective opening to any concert programme and the perfect way to begin the Suite. The theme tune from one of Britain's iconic comedy shows is in fact, an old tune entitled 'Alice, Where Art Thou' composed by Joseph Ascher, a Dutch composer and pianist. The opening title sequence of the show heard brass arranger, Max Harris performing his own version of the tune, who also composed the incidental music for the show. This light-hearted release coincides with the release of the new Open All Hours series starring David Jason who now runs the corner shop years later. A great easy going summer concert item and one that audience members will truly enjoy.(also playable by training bands)

This year, the British Bandsman ran a March Composition Competion with the winning enteries judged by Paul Hindmarsh, Michael Fowles, and Aidan Smith. the March, 'The Volunteer' is a pastiche contest March and was the winning entry in the 'Category 1' tier, composed in dedication to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make the Whit Friday march contests possible. The march was written with upper section bands in mind and aims be a complete showcase for a band's contest performance. In doing so, the music follows the form and style of contest marches popularised by great march composers George Allan, Thomas "T. J." Powell and William Rimmer. £29.50Battle of Britain - Ron Goodwin - Gavin Somerset
From the 1969 motion picture comes the overture from the epic war film, The Battle of Britain. The film tells the story of the summer 1940 where the British RAF, outnumbered, yet with radar on their side, strategically defeated the Luftwaffe. Unusually for a film, this picture had two scores composed, one by Sir William Walton and the other by Ron Goodwin. Following a decision made by those in charge at United Artists, only one segment of Walton's score was used to feature during the epic air battle scene. The remainder of the film's music fell to Ron Goodwin's who gave us the now famous title "Aces High" and the main theme.
