A composition of much contrast based on a well-known psalm melody. As its title announces, it starts with a majestic introduction in which parts of the psalm melody can be heard. Next we hear the complete psalm melody in the trombones, interrupted by passages full of dance in the discant. This is continued in a lively Allegro Molto, in which the psalm melody emerges in the trumpets and cornets, again interrupted by rhythmically pulsing quaver movements. The work ends with a flashing passage in a presto tempo. Majestic Prelude typically is a composition for the start of a concert.

As the title suggests, this opening work consists of a fanfare and a hymn. It was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgau, Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version, a short fanfare played just by cornets, trombones and timpani, a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. Fanfare and Hymn is an extremely practical and versatile ceremonial opening piece.

Irish Mood was written in a classic 'theme and variations' construction, opening with an Irish-inspired melodic theme, which is then followed by four variations of divergent character. After the introduction of the theme by the soloist, the cornets and trombones play the main melody in Variation 1, while the soloist provides a flowing counter melody. Next comes the highly extrovert and lively Variation 2, contrasted by an introverted Variation 3 in a minor key. A masterful tutti (Variation 4) then leads the piece toward a brilliant ending.

Composed in 2009 for Nicholas Childs and the Black Dyke BandThis piece tells the Willow Pattern legend through music. Several leitmotifs are used both for the different characters and also for some of the important emotions in the tale. Additionally, Knoon-se's part is mainly played by the flugel horn, Changby the euphonium, the Mandarin by the Eb Bass and the Duke Ta-jin by the trombone. The Willow Pattern LegendOnce, in ancient China, there lived a wealthy and powerful Mandarin who had a beautiful daughter, Knoon-se. She had fallen in love with Chang, a humble accountant, which angered her father who imprisoned her in the Pavilion by the river with only theexotic birds for company. She learnt that the Mandarin planned to marry her to the pompous Duke Ta-jin and that the wedding would take place on the day the blossom fell from the willow tree, so she sent Chang a message: "Gather thy blossom, ere it bestolen". The Duke arrived by sea amid great fanfare when the tree was heavy with bud, and nights of magnificent banquets followed. After one such occasion when the Mandarin slept, Chang crept over the crooked fence and tiptoed into the Pavilion to rescueKnoon-se, but as they escaped the alarm was raised. They fled over the bridge with the Mandarin close on their heels brandishing his whip.They managed to escape by boat to a secluded island where they lived happily for a time. Meanwhile, the Mandarin learned of their refuge and, intent on revenge, he ordered his soldiers to kill them. As Knoon-se and Chang slept at night, the men setfire to the pagoda in which they lived and the lovers perished in the flames. However, the Gods, moved by the lovers' plight, transformed their souls into two turtle-doves which rose from the charred remains, soaring above the Earth, symbolising eternal happiness. Willow Pattern is dedicated to the memory of Jean Harper who passed away as I was completing the piece and who was a great collector of porcelain and china-ware. NOTES ON PERFORMANCEMute Requirements:Metal mutes soprano cornet, repiano cornet, 2nd cornets, 3rd cornets (6 in total) Cup mutes all cornets and trombones (10 + 3) Harmon mutes soprano cornet, solo cornets, repiano cornet (6) Percussion Requirements:There are two parts for percussion on the score. Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterize the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a "grandioso" version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.

A brilliant concert-march in the best British martial tradition. Both the title and composition are based on the well-known hymn 'Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God'. Jerry B. Bensman schreef deze concertmars om zijn bands, die hij destijds dirigeerde, aan het werk te zetten. Met name de trombones en bassen moeten in deze mars (technisch gezien) aan de bak. Deze mars is dan ook een uitdaging voor de orkesten in de hogere divisies. Bensman maakt in deze mars gebruik van het lied 'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God' (Zoek eerst het Koninkrijk van God). De mars is daarom bij uitstek geschikt als muzikaal intermezzo in kerkdiensten en kerkconcerten.
