The first major Concert Work/Test Piece by Gavin Somerset for brass band takes the familiar tune, St. George's Windsor (Elvey) and gives us a highly enjoyable opus, full of music with which players & MDs can fully express themselves. Often sang to the harvest hymn, Come, Ye Thankful People Come, Its majesty and motifs make this an enjoyable piece to both play and listen to. The work's primary focus is on melody and music with all sections of the band involved in bringing this piece to life. Cristo Redentor' (Christ the Redeemer) is the Portuguese name of the unmistakable statue that overlooks every part of the vibrant Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. The composer was inspired to bring these images to music, creating various atmospheres to portray the diverse scenery. The melodies used, 'Lord I lift your name on high', 'Ochills' and 'There is a redeemer' are used to express the overall power of the love displayed for all in the outstretched arms of Christ the Redeemer.

Based on John Bunyan's poem 'He Who Would Valiant Be', the music reminds us of the words 'No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight, he will make good his right to be a pilgrim'. II. A transcription of the composer's own setting of 'God be in my head'. III. The original themes in this movement express feelings of joy and excitement of present day pilgrims journeying on the Christian path.
