The arranger had a dream..... The three wise men were looking for the baby Jesus to give him their gifts. This was done somewhat in the manner of the scene of Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'. The search was not successful - Sir Alan Sugar ('The 'Apprentice') made an appearance ordering the three wise men to "get off my land". Meanwhile, the baby Jesus slept peacefully on, unaware of the nearby disturbance. Bizarrely, this dream sequence was played out at high speed, as in the closing scene from each episode of 'The Benny Hill Show' of the 1970s. This arrangement attempts to portray this comical caper. Sir John Stainer's fine tune is often associated with Charles Wesley's hymn, 'Love divine, all loves excelling'. The introduction is designed to evoke a feeling of awe, and a broad, confident style will set the pattern for the whole arrangement. Contrast in colour has been sought in the scoring but special effects must not be allowed to obscure the melody. The arrangement ends in an atmosphere suggested by the final line of the hymn, 'Lost in wonder, love and praise'.

My Strength, My Tower - Rhapsodic Variations (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Goffin, Dean
This music consists of a theme followed by five extensive variations. The theme is the composer's own tune set to the words, 'Thee will I love, my strength, my tower', a hymn by Johann Scheffler translated by John Wesley. A strong modal flavour is characteristic of the theme. Variation 1: This is a light and graceful variation with a good deal of imitative writing. It leads, without a break, into the next variation. Variation 2: Fire and ferocity are asked for in the course of this variation. Variation 3: This variation demonstrates the original approach of the composer. Solo lines for cornet and euphonium are included with their arabesques and arpeggii. Variation 4: Taking the form of a passacaglia, the 'ground' is given out at once by the basses. Fragments of the 'ground', plain or decorated, are combined and used in a number of ways, revealing the composer's mastery of counterpoint. Variation 5: The briskly moving and scintillating final variation abounds in sudden variations of dynamic. The tempo remains constant until an increase is called for in the coda. This 'contest' version has been prepared by Brian Bowen who was asked to re-work the percussion part and introduce a repiano cornet part (Salvation Army band publications do not, in general, have a part for repiano cornet).

This is a transcription for brass band of the first, and most well-known, of Erik Satie's three Gymnopedies for piano which were composed in 1888. All three are similar melodically and pianistically. However, the first and last are more well-known, partly due to the later orchestrations by Debussy.Some mystery surrounds the Greek-rooted title, yet explicitness is immaterial to an appreciation of the music. This brass version should not mask the naivete of the original score, though that may be easier said than done.Tenor Horn and Eb Bass mutes are requested by the arranger and will enhance the transcription if available.
