£58.82Horizon: The Promise of the Lord (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
Horizon: The Promise of the Lord was written at the request of Bandmaster Stephen Cobb for The International Staff Band. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church, Cwm Rhondda (Guide me O thou great Jehovah). The work was recorded on the ISB's CD Manuscripts II (released 2023). This highly descriptive piece will be an excellent addition to concert programs, as well as being appropriate as a test piece. The inspiration for the work comes from the book of Exodus. Whilst the music is not intended to be directly programmatic, like the hymn Cwm Rhondda, the work takes the listener through the Exodus from Egypt to the promised land of Israel as a metaphor of the spiritual pilgrimage of the individual Christian through his or her earthly life. The music aims to evoke a sense of God's guidance through strife and affirm the reality that God provides for us and redeems all the wrong in the world. This God who provided for the Hebrew people wandering amidst 'barren lands' with 'bread of heaven' is still and ever will be a God of provisional grace. Through listening to the music, it is the composer's intention that we are reminded of God's promise of Deliverance as set out in Exodus 6 v7-8: 'I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.' Like the hymn, Horizon: The Promise of the Lord is intended as a prayer for guidance. The Christian is a pilgrim through 'this barren land'. The music is often chromatic and in large parts verging on atonality, as a reflection of the strife that the Israelites endured in their 40 years in the wilderness. However, it ends in climactic fashion with the Hebrew people finally reaching their destination after many years of wandering in the desert - as they approach the 'Horizon' promised by the Lord. ABOUT THIS PIECE: 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' was written by all members of the band Coldplay for their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin said: "The song came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce". The chart was originally released in 2003 to critical acclaim. In 2007 Mark Ronson covered the song on his album 'Version' - it is this version this arrangement is based upon. The following arrangement was devised as a concert opener - written as such to allow different sections of the band to make their way to the stage one at a time. The suggested stage entry directions for this arrangement are: Percussion > Basses > Trombones > Horns & Baritones > Cornets & Euphonium. Two tunes are featured, both well-known and instantly recognisable, namely, Forward! be our watchword and We're marching on.No.411 (1) O give thanks (Marian Parker)The composer, Marian Parker, is a new contributor and is the Recruiting Sergeant at Leicester South Corps. This simple, yet rhythmic piece should not pose any technical problems for most bands and features the attractive arrangement of Joanne Pond's contemporary song, 'O give thanks'.No.411 (2) Hymn Tune Arrangement - St Michael (David Rowsell)The hymn tune 'St Michael' was composed in 1551 by French composer Louis Bourgeois and the composer provides a very useful arrangement of this historic hymn.No. 412 Precious Lord, take my hand (Erik Silfverberg O.F.)This well-known Gospel Song is a favourite of many. It has been recorded by many great artists, including Rosetta Tharpe, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. The words were written by Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey, who is often known as the 'Father of Gospel song'.No. 413 Search Me (Gavin Whitehouse)The second new contributor to this journal is Gavin Whitehouse. gavin is the Assistant Music Director for the Greater New York Division and is also the USA Eastern Territorial Songster Leader. This piece combines two songs - one old and one new - which speak of a God who knows us intimately. 'Search me, O God and know my heart today' (associated with the beautiful Maori melody, 'Now is the hour') is woven with a contemporary setting of Psalm 139 by Rebecca St James, the first line of which says, 'You searchme, you know me'.

Legend - Geert Jan Kroon
Other than the title, there is no real story that connects this piece to eyeballs or werewolves. There is no real legend that precedes this work. The legend will evolve in the listener's mind while listening to this piece. For me, it started with the title. It was dreamed up by my son. He also suggested a musical gesture, which I then used to build all the musical materials in this piece. I have sought to capture a dark atmosphere with a sense of excitement. Although, there are some not so dark moments in the piece which serve as a musical contrast. I would like to invite every listener to imagine a world where there exists a legend of a bleeding eyeball and a blind werewolf. And if you do dream up a great story, please let me know and share it with each other!

Stories, illustrated in a musical way have always been a common feature in entertainment music. Many orchestras considered them welcome additions to their repertoirelist: it allowed the musicians a little time to relax while the audience could focus their attention on matters other than music (however competently performed).In Snowhooderella several fairy tales are mixed up and this may explain the title: SNOWwhite, Little Red Riding HOOD, CindERELLA. The relationship between fairytale, cocktail and the Grimm brothers needs no further explanation. As you may see now, the title is not just nonsense; it has a certain meaning.

DescriptionThis arrangement of Corelli's famous "Christmas Concerto" features soprano cornet, two solo cornets and solo euphonium. Arcangelo Corelli was one of the first masters of the baroque period, a skilled violinist much admired by fellow composers like Bach and Handel. He was born in Fusignano, near Ferrara in Northern Italy in 1653. He studied in nearby Bologna where he became an extremely competent violinist. By the 1670s he was working in Rome and building a reputation as a composer at the important and powerful Papal court. By the late 1600s he was widely famous all over Europe, regularly invited to important courts and palaces. Although he had a huge influence on the virtuoso writing of later composers, his writing for string instruments was designed to be playable by average, often amateur players.His set of Concerti Grossi known as Opus 6 was not published in his lifetime. We think they were written around 1690, and they were first published in Amsterdam in 1714, a year after Corelli's death. A 'Concerto Grosso' is a concerto for a group of soloists (the "concertino" group) accompanied by an ensemble (the "ripieno" group) and was an important form in the Baroque era. Handel's very successful examples were modelled on Corelli's example. Number 8 from the Opus 6 set was commissioned by the Venetian Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and bears the inscriptionFatto per la notte di Natale('made for the night of Christmas'). It was used as part of the soundtrack for the 2003 film 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World".Performance Notes.In this arrangement the 'Concertino' group are the soprano cornet, solo cornets 1 & 2 and the solo euphonium. If logistics allow they should stand either at the front of or some distance away from the band. There is no percussion in this arrangement.
