£55.00Purcell Variations (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Purcell Variations, composed in 1995, the year of the tercentenary of the death of the great English composer, was a watershed work in that it was Downie's first extended composition to be published independently of The Salvation Army and intended for wider use.For his theme, Downie has chosen what has come down to us as the hymn tune Westminster Abbey, which is in fact an adaptation made in 1842 by Ernest Hawkins, who was a Canon of Westminster Abbey where Purcell himself had been organist. Purcell's original is actually the closing section of an anthem, O God, Thou art my God, where it provides the final paean of praise, sung to repeated 'Hallelujahs'. Purcell's tune, particularly the opening triadic gesture, is used as a source of thematic and harmonic material - a quarry for ideas if you like: "I was obsessed with the intervals of thirds in Purcell's tune, rather like Brahms in his Third Symphony", the composer says.There are five variations, preceded by an extended introduction and theme. In the first variation, Purcell's lilting dance pulse has been transformed into a bright, playful sequence, in which each phrase of the melody is given its own transformation. In the second, Purcell's opening gambit is extended into a graceful, flowing waltz, featuring solo and first horn at the top of the register. The composer offers a range of metronome speeds in this movement, in which he is emulating the wistful elegance of Erik Satie's famous Gymnopedie. We enter the world of big band jazz in variation three, where Purcell's tune strides along with added syncopation and bluesy major/minor thirds to the fore. After the breathless energy and blazing brass of the big band, Downie moves into his 'home territory' for a beautifully worked lyrical variation. There is an enhanced urgency about the final variation, which opens with an extended reprise of the work's introduction. Purcell's second and third phrases provide the preparation for the exuberant return, in customary triumph of Purcell's 'Hallelujah'.

My soul, rejoice (Andrew Wainwright) was commissioned in 2022 by Elizabeth Malovance, principal cornet of the Chicago Staff Band. A spirited and celebratory work, it is designed to showcase the dual nature of the cornet: its sparkling technical agility and its rich, vocal lyricism. The music begins in meditative fashion before transitioning into a joyful caprice featuring playful syncopations which are handed around the band. This is followed by a reflective section based on the much-loved worship song I love you Lord by Laurie Klein. The work concludes with a reprise of the original theme, building in momentum and intensity. Through a series of brilliant runs and virtuosic flourishes, the soloist leads the charge toward a majestic and triumphant finale, bringing the work to a ringing, glorious close. The solo was recorded by Richard Marshall on the 2026 CD Gothique Fantasy - The Music of Andrew Wainwright, which was his last solo recording of his 20-year tenure as principal cornet of Black Dyke Band. Technical Requirements & Electroacoustic Integration This work features an optional digital delay effect for the soloist, indicated in the score by "pedal on" and "pedal off" markings. Je te veux, or I Want You, is a valse chantee (sung waltz) by the French composer Erik Satie, with lyrics by Henry Pacory. It was written for Paulette Darty, who first sang it in 1903 at La Scala, Paris, with Satie accompanying. There are various versions that Satie produced, the original for piano and voice, a version for brass 'orchestra', for full orchestra (where a trio section was added), and a version for solo piano (but including the new trio section). This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass, and is of the longer version (with the trio section). As a result, it lends itself to being performed in a various of ways, with the ensemble has the option of selecting the part of it compound ternary form to play: (A-B-A)(C-D-C)(A-B-A). This rousing march by Dave Collins is a dedication to the remarkable group of volunteers - the unsung heroes - who, each year, organise and run the iconic Whit Friday brass band contests. They ensure that the heritage and tradition of this uniquely special event is not lost, preserving its ongoing and continued success. Its importance in the annual calendar to the players, supporters and spectators is vital to the Tameside and Saddleworth community. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work.The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. The work aims to be a good test for the bands in its performance, but also fun and entertaining for the players and audiences alike - featuring a cheeky cornet solo, thunderous bass feature, and lyrical euphonium melodies, before concluding with a triumphant quote from the original source material.To you all who perform or hear this work, the stewards of the brass band tradition, HAIL!
