Main Theme from Piano Concerto Number 2

The second movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto is arguably one of his most endearingly popular pieces. Written between 1900 and 1901, it marks a turning point in the composer's life - for years he was riddled with self-doubt and suffering with depression, the second piano concerto is believed to be the breaking of his writers block. The concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, a physician who had done much to restore Rachmaninoff's self-confidence. in 1975, Eric Carmen adapted the second movement for his ballad: "All by Myself". The following arrangement was produced for Wingates Band's appearance at the 2015 Brass in Concert competition at the Sage Gatesehead. The theme of the programme presented was 'Alice in Wonderland' and the following arrangement was used to represent 'The Mock Turtle'. The other pieces presented were:'Mad March Hare's March and the Well Crazy TeaParty' (available late 2017), 'Piano Concerto Number 2 by Rachmaninov' and 'Dreaming' by Schumann (available from Cantatio Music).

The Golden Apples of the Sun - Rodney Newton - -

This work was commissioned in 2012 by the percussionist, Yasuaki Fukuhara, and takes its title from the final verse of W.B.Yeats' poem, The Song of Wandering Aengus;Though I am old with wandering,Through hollow lands and hilly lands,I will find out where she has gone,And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass,And pluck till time and times are done,The silver apples of the moon,The golden apples of the sun. This piece does not seek to follow the narrative of the poem, but rather takes lines from it as an inspiration for three contrasting movements. The first movement, Through Hollow Lands and Hilly Lands, is in the form of a dogged march over a repeated bass line, featuring tom-toms, snare drum and cymbals playing rhythms associated with rock drumming. At the end of the movement, the marimba enters with material that will be heard in the next movement. The second movement, The Silver Apples of the Moon, features vibraphone, glockenspiel and crotales, as well as the dobachi (a resonant bronze bowl of Japanese origin). The music is delicate and ethereal. In contrast, the final movement, The Golden Apples of the Sun, is energetic and fiery, featuring tubular bells, timpani and other tuned percussion instruments including cowbells.

    Carols for Band

Designed to be playable by any combination from quartet to full brass band, wind band or orchestra, the arrangements in this book will provide a practical solution to all your carolling needs. Parts are divided strictly into Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass so that any suitable instrumentation will sound well, provided that an equal balance of players per 'voice' is maintained. The carols are printed in alphabetical order, so they are easy to find, and comprehensively indexed under both first line and name of tune.Aimed primarily at brass and wind bands, and in an effort to keep top E flat as the highest note for singing, the keys that have been chosen are mainly on the flat side. String parts are provided so that instrumentation is comprehensive, but it may be found easier to raise some of the keys when a predominantly string ensemble is used. This can be done without actual transposition and is a common trick among organists: for example a piece in G flat or D flat can be played in G or D merely by changing the key signature and altering the accidentals.Dynamics have not been used and are at the discretion of the conductor. The score and all of the parts are available seperately and standard brass and wind band sets (25 parts in each) can be ordered at a cheaper rate. These sets do not contain the Score, Timpani or Percussion parts.
