Commissioned by Radoy Brass for their 20 years anniversary.This version was first performed by Manger Skulemusikklag in 2005.The Work is devided into Five Scenes:1. Sverdet (The Sword) 3:452. Advarsel - fra en vis mann (Warning - from a Wise Man) 2:303. Dragen (The Dragon) 3:004. Advarsel II - fra syngende fugler (Warning II - from singing birds) 1:355. Gull - forbannelsen (Gold - The Curse) 2:50Total durata 13:30This work is based on five scenes from the tale about "Sigurd Favnesbane" (Sigurd the dragonslayer). Moods and atmospheres in the piece represent my way of retelling the old myth.1. The SwordThe dwarf blacksmith Regin is hammering and sharpening the edges of the magical sword Gram. After three attempts the sword is finally sharp enough to kill a dragon. 2. Warning - from a Wise manRichard Wagners opera Sigfried is based on the same story. In the opera the hero get warned by a wise man. He tells the secret of how to survive an attack of the dragon by hiding in a hole in the pathway and then kill the dragon with the sword as thedragon passes on its way to the river to drink water.3. DragonThe Dragon (Favne) guards a fantastic treasure, but he is also the brother of the blacksmith Regin. Favne get killed and his blood flows slowly while he laments (trombone/bass trombone).4. Warning II - from singing birdsWhile frying the heart, Sigurd burns his thumb and put it into his mouth to cool it down. Then he swallow a drop of fresh magic dragon blood which transfers the ability to understand the birdlanguage. The birds sing warnings to Sigurd telling himthat Regin will betray him and later kill him. Sigurd then kills Regin instead.5. Gold - the CurseSigurd takes the gold treasure and escapes on the horseback of Grane. But his robbery of the gold lead him into trouble: The gold is banned and a curse will hit everyone whotakes it...Myth is a programmatic work where the story is quite clearly illustrated throughout the piece:In the first movement you can hear the blacksmith working with hammer on ambolt while the heat is intense from the glows. The dwarf has got his own theme i lower brass (bar 4-5). The hero Sigurd has his own identifying chord (2 bars before F). Thechord is also a symbol of the sword.In the second movement the warning from the wise man is expressed in the lyric bass line.The airblow in instruments illustrate the dragon Favne on his way out of his cave, and later the blood flows slowly. The dragon takes his last deep breath after a painful duet in trombones. The birds sing their motifs (lightly, but not cheerfulthough), until Sigurd cuts the head off Regin and it hits the ground.The last movement describes the atmosphere andstate of mind as the curse infects the obsessed thief.

This exciting new 22-minute concert suite for Brass Sextet has been composed during the months of lockdown charting the feelings of a nation, with seven movements playable by 6 (or more) players. The music was composed with the intention for players to perform either together live in a small group, in isolation by way of a virtual performance (downloadable backing tracks are available to play along to) and ultimately, to give players something to enjoy as we all miss our brass band families. This concert suite is the perfect addition to all bands' libraries at a time when rehearsals are limited. Several of the movements are already in preparation for a full band edition to be released at a later date: (also available as a digital download worldwide - purchase now & print to play). Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead. This piece was written as a full length virtuosic solo based on an earlier work called Humble Hero, which is also available from BrookWright Music. It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Ken Bradley (1962 - 2022) was one of Australia's best-known, well-loved, and talented brass musicians. The solo is also available from this website with piano accompaniment. This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour.
