£44.95Trailblazers (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Mackereth, Andrew
This overture draws its inspiration from the story of the first Household Troops Band. It tells the story of the 1887 band, the subsequent lull of nearly a hundred years and the re-awakening of the Troops phenomenon in 1985. It was originally written in 1995 and featured prominently by the band on its North American tour of 2002. Given the history of the Household Troops Band, it is fitting that this composition is preoccupied with marching. It begins with a marching song played by a solitary muted cornet, symbolic not only of the call to bandsmen to join the evangelical effort but also a muso-dramatic device to indicate the steady increase in members and technical ability! The music quickly develops into stirring versions of 'A robe of white' and 'Storm the forts of darkness' with two early day Salvation Army tunes crucially adding to the narrative; 'Marching on in the light of God' and 'Soldiers of our God, arise!' The second section is a reflective setting of the Herbert Booth song, 'The penitent's plea'. This song serves to represent the many people who were 'saved' during those early day campaigns. The expressive music transports the listener through a period of uncertainty and angst until finally reaching the song, 'There is a message, a simple message, and it's a message for us all'. The final section deals first with the emergence from the annals of history with the muted cornet figure again before, symbolically, the present day band bursts forth with an emphatic statement of 'Would you be free from your burden of sin? There's power in the blood'. The stirring climax represents a fitting tribute to those gallant pioneering musicians and their equally impressive and dedicated contemporaries.

Isle of Music - Max Stannard
This piece was written for the Friezland Band tour of the Isle of Man in 2025. It was performed as part of all three concerts the band gave in Douglas, Onchan and Castletown. It consists of three Manx traditional melodies which begins with a setting that incorporates driving energy into the song 'Arrane ny Niee', followed by the more plaintiff and reflective 'Arrane Oie Vie', before a lively finale of 'Hunt the Wren'. GATHERING, The (Brass Band Set) - Marcus Venables
This concert opener was written for the Canadian Staff Band and its European tour, culminating in its attendance of the ISB120 event in London in June 2011. The tour included some time in Holland and, appropriately, the well-known Dutch hymn 'We gather together' was selected as the source material for this work. The melody is used in a couple of different settings before reaching a rousing conclusion.

PRAISE TO THE LORD (Brass Band Set) - Andrew Mackereth
Written for the 2003 tour of Canada and USA by Bristol Easton Band of The Salvation Army, this set of variations provides the whole band with a stern examination of technical and musical aptitude, whilst engaging the listener from beginning to end. The commission given to the composer was to create a set of variations with a similar framework to that of Edward Gregson's 'Variations on Laudate Dominum'. As in the famous Gregson work, the theme (Lobe den Herren) is not heard in its entirety until the final section when the majestic tune provides a fitting and stirring conclusion to the music.

BEULAH LAND (Brass Band Set) - Wilfred Heaton - Paul Hindmarsh
Wilfred Heaton began to assemble material for 'Beulah Land' in the early 1990s following a request from the Amsterdam Staff Band for a new work. Despite reminding himself on the manuscript that he should either complete or destroy the work before his death, ultimately he did not manage either. This edition was subsequently realised in 2003 for the tour of the USA Western States by the Amsterdam Staff Band.'Beulah Land' is Heaton's vision of the joy that awaits the Christian in Heaven and, according to his family, is reminiscent of the kind of music he often improvised at the piano. The three movements are as follows;1. Better World; a waltz sequence on the tune 'Zealley' to which the words 'There is a better world, they say' are sung.2. Heavenly Home; an elegiac cortege using the tunes 'My home is in Heaven', 'I have a home that is fairer than day' and 'The home over there'.3. Happy Land; Beginning in waltz rhythm this soon gives way to a sequence of free variations on the song 'There is a happy land, Far, far away'.

This evocative brass band arrangement by Andrew Wainwright was commissioned by the Fountain City Brass Band for its 2023 tour of England, including a performance at the prestigious Brass in Concert Championships. Featuring prominent solos for baritone and flugel horn, the arrangement makes full use of their lyrical warmth and tonal richness. Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilaratingwork was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring the solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations. ATONEMENT (Brass Band Set) - Roger Trigg
This work was written at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth for the 2011 tour of the UK by the Melbourne Staff Band culminating in a performance given at the Royal Albert Hall during ISB120 Staff Bands in Concert.The opening reflects the history, vastness and majesty of the composer's Australian homeland and introduces a motif taken from the Tomlin/Reeves song, 'The wonderful cross' which is featured in its entirety later in the work. The whole in predominantly joyous and musically easy to digest with occasional references to 'Waltzing Matilda'!

NONE OTHER NAME (Brass Band Set) - Erik Leidzen
None Other Name was written for the 1960 tour of England by the New York Staff Band of The Salvation Army and can justifiably be termed a classic of brass band repertoire. It is best described as a symphonic medley of six songs focused on the name of Christ; The Saviour's Name; Jesus is the Sweetest Name I know; There's a Wonderful Name, 'tis Jesus; He's the Lily of the Valley; Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee (St. Agnes); All Hal the Power of Jesus' Name (Diadem).
