March - Proud to serve (Ray Steadman-Allen)One of the last works written by Lt. Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen and dedicated to the Chatham Corps, this march was featured by the International Staff Band at the composers tribute evening at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham in 2015. A slow, bluesy solo for trombone with band accompaniment. Composer Rob Wiffin wrote this piece after sorting through old paperwork during the Covid lockdown of Spring 2020, rediscovering songs from years earlier that had been written with just melody and chord symbols. 'Do you Recall?' developed from one such song into a trombone solo, and has since proved popular with trombonists, having already been recorded by Brett Baker. It is not intrinsically difficult but calls for an appropriate slow swing style and good control throughout the range. 'Ye Joyous Bells in Heaven' was composed for the Thurlstone Brass Band near Sheffield in memory of their band's stalwart John Wilmot. The Sheffield area is synonymous for it's local musical culture and melodies, and one of these - Stannington, was a particular favourite of John's. This short and bustling concert work is a joyous fantasy on the melody, with short solo features for a number of players within the band.
