California Legend was inspired by Las Sergas de Esplandian by Garci Ordonez de Mantalvo, published in Seville in 1510. Quoting from 'A Companion to California', the story recounts the fictional adventures of Esplandian. Among the places he visits is one "on the right hand of the indies, an island called California, very near to the Terrestial Paradise, which was peopled with black women, accustomed to live after the fashion of Amazons, there arms were full of gold. The land was ruled by a Queen named Calafia."

This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not only elaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4th division of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017. Duration: 10.30

Fanfare of a Nation (2012) was commissioned by the Greater Gwent Youth Brass Ensemble as a short fanfare for ten brass players plus percussion, and was performed in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh on the occasion of their visit to Wales to mark the Diamond Jubilee, under its original title The Royal Diamond Jubilee Fanfare. The fanfare has since been performed throughout the UK with both its original instrumentation, and also the extended full brass band version. Written in 1851, the Albion Polka was written by Johann Strauss II (or Strauss Junior) and dedicated to Count Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The work takes its title from the old Roman name for Britain. It is not an unfamiliar addition to the Vienna New Year's Concerts. ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this arrangement of Sunset by Paul Mottram from his album Symphonic Minimalism. Originally recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, this piece is often heard on TV and radio, most recently on Ken Bruce's show on BBC Radio 2 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Paul says of this piece: "I very loosely modelled the track on some of the compositions of John Barry - a simple lyrical melodic style with an almost regal feel and beautiful orchestral sound. I was indeed imagining a sunset when I wrote it and had some sense of the piece having an ultimate warm, resigned, quiet finality about it". You can read more about the piece here.
