The Dreaded Groove and Hook (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon

The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in ‘pop’ terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge ‘riff’ that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses. The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. It has been recorded by the same band and conductor on the CD entitled Penlee.Suitable for 1st Section Bands and aboveDuration: 4.00

    Wired - Lucy Pankhurst

A fantastically funky piece! So good it was featured on BBC television during the 2010 general election campaign coverage for the North West and at the 2014 International Women’s Brass Conference.Originally written in 2009 for Jason Katsikaris and the Leyland Band, Lucy Pankhurst has created a vivacious, energetic work which is strong on percussion and style! It’s fast-moving, completely engaging and makes for compulsive toe-tapping and the need to ‘get into the groove’! Huge opportunities for the kit player/percussion section to show their wild side and, so as not to be outdone, plenty of other moments for improvisation-esque solos from other quarters. If you can keep up, this is a really great contribution to your concert programme.Look and Listen (performance courtesy of Oslofjord Brass from their appearance at the 2010 Grenland International Brass Festival 2010):

Diamonds - Jerry Lordan - Len Jenkins

In November 1962, ex-Shadows members Jet Harris and Tony Meehan decided to work as a duo and went to No 1 with a Jerry Lordan composition, "Diamonds". Harris, a bass player, took an ordinary Fender guitar and detuned every string a whole tone to enable him to hit notes which were lower than an ordinary guitar. However, it was apparently difficult to work with on stage since once the strings were slackened they would go out of tune very easily. The duo went on to have a second Top 10 hit with "Scarlett O'Hara" which is also available from Wobbleco Music in an arrangement for brass band. Both arrangements seek to capture the characteristic style of 60's rock music and retain the signature drum solos for which they are rightly remembered. But in addition, both pieces also appeal to a younger generation who may not have heard the originals. Our young kit drummer in Woburn Sands 'A' Band commented "...the (drum) part has the slightest shuffle feel to it, which improves the groove of the song, and to replicate the vintage snare-drum sound, I have heard that you can place a towel or a cloth over the head of the drum. I think it would work well...(otherwise) the drum part stays relatively simple and repetitive"...Chance to re-create the sound of the 60's.....Go for it!
