This work was composed in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth English Composer Sir Edward Elgar. The suite is in three movements: 'Introduction', 'Elegy' and 'March', each of which have been inspired by three of Elgar's most celebrated works; Chanson de Matin, Nimrod ('Variation IX' from the Enigma Variations) and Pomp and Circumstance No.1.'Introduction' - Hollybush HillHollybush Hill is the name of one of the peaks of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. The Malverns were a favourite walking area for Elgar and his wife, and their panoramic views inspired much of Elgar's music.'Elegy' - BroadheathBroadheath is the small village at the foot of the Malvern Hills where Elgar was born (and lived at various times throughout his life). Elgar is buried not far from Broadheath at St Wulstan's in Little Malvern. 'March' - Worcester CathedralMany of the Worcestershire ensembles and music festivals played an important role in Elgar's early musical education. He was heavily involved in The Three Choirs Festival and either conducted or played in many of the light orchestras and vocal groups that performed at venues across Worcester. A statue of Elgar overlooks the Cathedral at the end of Worcester High Street.An Elgar Portrait has been used regularly as an own-choice test-piece for Section 4 bands, and was also selected as the set work for the Swiss National Championships in 2007 as well as the Pontins Championships in 2008. The composer has slightly reworked this piece for the Section 4 Final of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 2020 and it's this version that should be performed at the contest. This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion. Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' £24.95Lest We Forget - Christopher Bond
Lest We Forget is a phrase added as a final line at the end of the Ode of Remembrance, taken from Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen, first published in The Times newspaper in September 1914. Providing the title for this work for brass band, the piece aims to combine both the acoustic nature of the brass band medium alongside narrated passages and pre-recorded extracts to provide a moving tribute. The words originally spoken by Prime Minister Herbert Asquith in 1914 can be narrated in performance. However, a free audio download, manipulated to sound like a 1914 radio broadcast is available from Prima Vista. Lest We Forget received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014, performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, conducted by Robert Childs. The work opened their winning Brass in Concert programme, and has since been performed by bands all over the world as a fitting tribute to the Great War.

Tubilation
A fantastic tuba feature with brass band backing. Driving semiquaver rhythms push this piece forwards whilst remaining away from the centre of attention which is undoubtedly the big old tuba! Full of semiquavers and scales rushing up to the top of the range of the instrument, there can be no doubt that the tuba is the star of the show. The solo part is carefully thought through with enough rests to make it approachable, while the syncopatino in the other parts give the music an energy that is maintained to the very final flourish, instigated by a demisemiquaver scale run on the tuba! Intermediate and above ensemble parts, but the solo tuba part needs a fairly skilled and confident player to get the most out of this piece.

DURATION: 12'00". DIFFICULTY: 1st+. 'Four Courtly Dances' was composed for Brass Band Burgermusik Luzern in 2025 for their Brass & Sport Gala Concert in the KKL Luzern. The work is a tribute to career of Swiss Tennis great Roger Federer with each movement giving a musical 'nod' to the story of his life and career. Each movement is inspired by a traditional 'courtly' (not in a tennis sense, but that was the idea!) dance:. 1. Inspiration (Almain) . The opening movement is subtitled 'Elegance on Court', backed by a deep-rooted sense of Swiss nationlism, featuring a prelude based upon the traditional Swiss song 'Guggisberglied'. . 2. Success & Failure (Galliard) . A movement centred around the trials and tribulations of an elite sportsperson, with antiphonal cornet & tambourine groups playing avirtuosic musical tennis match across the band. . 3. Rivalry (Sarabande & Canario) . An upbeat movement fused with Spanish and Balkan influences, inspired by Federer's long-running rivalries with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. . 4. Legacy (Pavane) . A final reflective and uplifting homage to the legacy leftby one of the greatest sportspeople of all time, culminating in a coda whichbrings together all the previous 'ingredients' which made Federer the icon he is. . .

£74.99Cornet Concerto No.1 - Jonathan Bates
My 'Cornet Concerto No.1' was composed for Lode Violet and Brass Band Willebroek in 2018 and features 2 movements, entitled 'Dystopia' and 'Utopia'. . The nature of the music in the opening section, 'Dystopia', is very jagged, disjointed and unsettling, as the soloist almost battles against the constant churning of the mechanical accompaniment, trying to persevere with it's own ideas and styles without being dragged into conforming to it's surroundings. The movement is based largely on the 3 note interval heard right at the outset of the piece (C, D & G#, a series of notes that lends itself so well to different modes, scales, harmonies and intervals) and this forms much of the rhythmic and harmonic structure of the opening section.Whilst this movement acts as a virtuoso feature to demonstrate the extended capabilities of both the soloist and instrument, I feel the accompanying ensemble plays an equal role in the narrative of 'dystopia', and features a number of demanding and prominent episodes for soloists within the accompanying band. A short and heavy coda concludes the movement, with a sense of real pain and sorrowfulness as the music fades away into darkness. . 'Utopia' opens in an instantly more hopeful nature, with the soloist introducing the first real 'theme' of the movement, taken up shortly by the accompaniment. Throughout this movement, there are a number of timbral and melodic references back to the darkness of 'dystopia', but transformed into a much more positive outlook and soundworld. There is a moment of quiet reflect (using the initial 3 note cell as a basis) before flying head first into a frenzied wild 'tarantella' like section, full of joy and energy which tests the dexterity and light-natured approach to virtuosity (much unlike the heavier material in the 1st movement) of the soloist. Primarily, the concept of this finale is fun - joy, happiness, and freedom from restraint, so the addition of a quirky 'tongue-in-cheek' habanera section offers a brief moment of respite from the craziness of the tarantella. To conclude the work, there is an extended cadenza for the soloist which is built on several motifs heard throughout the concerto, which leads the band into a dramatic and energetic final few bars..
