The continued collaboration between director Tim Burton and film score composer Danny Elgman has led to numerous unforgettable soundtracks, such as Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks! as well as Batman. Elfman's music captures the vivid dark undertones of the movie, and manages to maintain comic elements. Batman is such a popular character that even the likes of pop-star Prince contributed to the sound track with the song Batdance. Variazioni in Blue is a series of variations in which elements from the Blues, such as the specific blue notes, run throughout the piece. Following a stately introduction, which includes part of the theme, is an ornamental variation in classical style. We then hear a variation in Blues style, followed by a fast variation with an Eastern European folklore feel. The Andante con espressivo is particularly fine with its attractive harmonic changes. This variation develops into a repeat of the previous folklore variations with its major variation forming a climax towards the end.Duration: 6:30

This work was commissioned by the London Borough of Redbridge with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain, and was first performed at the London Festival of 1972 by the Redbridge Youth Band, conducted by John Ridgeon.Intrada is in three sections, the first and last being similar. The middle section unfolds an expansive chromatic melody, heard initially on the horns, but later in canon between cornets and trombones. The work is lively throughout and has strong rhythmic elements as its chief characteristic, including changing time patterns and syncopations.Duration: 6.00

This piece was composed with the intention of replicating some of the sounds of the New Orleans Brass Bands; particularly those whose music has a funky, riff-based edge to their sound e.g. the Hot 8, Rebirth, Dirty Dozen and Soul Rebels brass bands. As well as elements of the second line parade, the music also has a full-on, swing out section.

Commissioned by the Greater Manchester Hub Youth Brass Band for their 2014 season, Starburst is a high-octane work in a contemporary style with elements of rock and funk fusion. The piece features soloistic input from all sections, with vibrant percussion colours adding to the overall effectiveness. Although the piece sounds extremely virtuosic it is accessible for most bands, and is fun to rehearse as well as exciting to listen to. This Gustav Holst piece contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure. It has been arranged here for the full brass band and has had light percussion parts added to complement. It starts with the band in full chord and then pairs down to solo instruments playing Good Christian Men monophonically. This piece has all of the essential elements of Holst's harmony and tension while retaining the joy of Christmas. It ends quietly and reflectively and works very well in large acoustics such as a Church building or large town hall.

Nightglow (Bra) - Ben Hollings
The young British composer Ben Hollings found his inspiration for 'Nightglow' during a night out in the open air. The work is inspired by a nocturnal celestial scene in which the scattered stars, comets, galaxies and other astronomical elements create a warm 'nocturnal glow' in the darkness of space. A beautiful slow work for any band!
