Sand and Stars illustrates the journey of the aviator-writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery when he attempted to break the record for a Paris-Saigon flight. Composer Philip Sparke used the region of Seeland, located in the north-west part of Switzerland, with its three lakes (Morat, Neuchatel and Bienne) as the starting point for his Lakeland Variations. The work comprises an introduction and five variations based on motifs contained in the opening bars. The three lakes are represented by the three notes of the opening timpani solo, the intervals of which, a quarter and a second (together with a cornet figure), form the basis of all the following variations.Duration: 10:30

Sanctuary was commissioned by Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass from New Zealand and was performed as an own choice piece at the 2018 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster central section builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. This beautiful music is from the end of Act 2 of the opera Hansel and Gretel by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921). The duet is a prayer by the brother and sister as they seek the protection of angels before falling asleep on the forest floor. The opera, Humperdinck's most famous composition, is based on the fairy tale by the Grimm brothers, and has libretto by the composer's sister. It was first performed in December, 1893.

Orpheus is known as the most talented music player of the ancient times. It is said that god Apollo was his father, from whom took his extreme talent in music, and the Muse Calliope was his mother. Tragedy struck when his wife, Eurydice stepped on a viper which in turn bit her, injecting its fatal venom. Nothing could stop his cries of anguish and sheer pain and sorrow upon realizing his beautiful Eurydice was dead. Orpheus decided to go into the Underworld to get his wife back. Apollo, his father, would talk to Hades, the god of the Underworld to accept him and hear his plea. And so Orpheus set off into the Underworld and was warned that for no reason must he look back while his wife was still in the dark, for that would undo everything he hoped for. As Orpheus was reaching the exit of the Underworld, he could hear the footfalls of his wife approaching him. As his was approaching the exit, his heart was beating faster and faster. The moment he stepped on the world of the living, he turned his head to hug his wife. Unfortunately, he got only a glimpse of Eurydice before she was once again drawn back into the underworld. When Orpheus turned his head, Eurydice was still in the dark, she hadn't seen the sun and, was drowned back to the dark world of the dead. Waves of anguish and despair swept over him and shuddering with grief he approached the Underworld again but this time, he was denied entry, the gates were standing shut and god Hermes, sent by Zeus, wouldn't let him in. His songs were no more joyful but extremely sad. His only comfort was to lay on a huge rock and feel the caress of the breeze, his only vision were the open skies. Song of the Night Sky was recorded by Tom Hutchinson and the Cory Band in June 2015, featuring on his debut solo album.Duration: 4.15

Upon first hearing this beautiful composition by John Rutter, it seemed obvious that it would not only be a great piece for combined Band and Chorus, but also would be a perfect solo for trumpet. Therefore, in addition to the arrangement for either combined band and chorus, or trumpet solo and band, this arrangement for Brass Band is now available as well. The beauty and simplicity of the piece should certainly allow it to become a mainstay in the repertoire of trumpet solos at any level.

2012 National Championships Finals - First Section.Commissioned for the 2012 Section 1 Finals as a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the work is in three contrasting continuous sections that run continuously and the music is derived from Parry's coronation anthem, I Was Glad. The sections are:In Memorium, evoking the noble but gentle personality of the Queen's father, George VI. Opening with an atmospheric baritone solo (and later featuring solo horn, flugel horn, euphonium and solo cornet), the music explores themes of grief, sentimentality and hope.Coronation, a fanfare and subsequent theme which is grandiose in style, capturing the spirit and excitement of British pomp and ceremony.The closing, Jubilate is a celebration of life and family values, Vivat being Latin for life, or long life. The music passes through moments of tension, virtuosity, humour and jubilance before a finale constructed from connected musical fragments, drawn from throughout the work, form (for the first time) Parry's majestic I Was Glad theme.Duration: 10.45
