Elixir of Youth (2013) was written for the 2013 Brass for Heroes charity event where it was premiered on 19th October 2013 at St Paul's Hall in Huddersfield under the baton of Philip Harper. The title of the work reflects the nature of the band that was put together for that premiere performance; an all-star youth band comprising a selection of the country's young brass banding talent, with the term Elixir referring here to the everlasting talent seen in young brass players throughout the United Kingdom's brass bands and bands' and teachers abilities to keep producing such high quality musicians for the banding movement.The work, structured in three sections, is a showcase for band with a heroic opening where fanfare-like gestures in the cornets and trombones juxtapose rapid euphonium and baritone runs, alongside sweeping horns and percussion effects. As the piece progresses, a grove is introduced - just in the tubas at first, accompanied by a hi-hat - before spreading through the band, definitely stuff to tap your toes to! The middle, slower section of the work sees both flugel and cornet solos, with additional inputs from the euphonium and solo horn before a climax and return to the tempo and music of the opening section. A rousing close concludes the work where all of the work's themes are interweaved to create a sense of power, unity and grandeur; an Elixir of Youth.

After a bold introduction, the melody unfolds through unison and close'harmony writing, leading to a Flugel Horn solo with scope for improvisation. The well'known hymn I Love to Tell the Story is heard in a New Orleans style before a modulation launches an energetic shout chorus and lively coda. Smooth, relaxed swing style is key throughout.2267: The old rugged cross (Erik Leidzn)This arrangement by Erik Leidzn is an early and lesser'known setting of a well'loved hymn, rediscovered during research into his work. Edited from a rare score found in the USA East Music Department archives, it demonstrates Leidzn's economical and effective style, creating a practical and expressive arrangement at a time when concise, serviceable hymn settings were greatly needed.2268: Heaven came down! (Michael Cooper)Inspired by William Booth's famous challenge to use contemporary styles for sacred purpose, this piece blends high'energy jazz'fusion big'band writing with a joyful gospel hymn. Driven by rhythm, syncopation and precision, the music proclaims its message of transformation and spiritual joy with vitality, clarity and infectious swing.

Born during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pageant by Australian composer Barrie Gott transforms the simple interval of a fourth into an engaging, multi-faceted set of variations. Written specifically with 4th Section bands in mind, this work delivers rich textural contrast, clear educational rewards, and a crowd-pleasing arc that moves from regal tradition to high-energy rock. The piece opens with a majestic herald, setting a ceremonial tone as a warm, mellow melody dialogues with bright, fanfare-like brass. From there, the music moves through three distinct stylistic worlds: a delicate, nimble variation inspired by the craft of Eric Ball's A Little Suite for Band; a smooth, lyrical ballad featuring the solo cornet and flugel horn; and a high-energy finale grounded in a driving 6/8 rock groove, bringing the work to a dramatic, cinematic finish. Fallen Souls was the winner of Grimethorpe Colliery Band's 1st Annual Composition Competition in 2023. This depictive and impactful work explores the theme of human fallibility. The piece begins with a slow, yearnful introduction that depicts a fall from grace, represented by a horn solo that reflects the innate goodness of humanity. However, the music soon becomes more agitated and dissonant as it represents the temptations that can lead us astray. The opening reaches a climax of chaos and despair, as we are shown the devastating consequences of our choices. The following section depicts the temptations of humanity. The music is chaotic and seductive in this section, with regular time changes and rhythmic instability, representing the many temptations that surround us. The section ends with a sense of uncertainty, as we are left wondering whether we will succumb to these temptations. There is a reprise of the opening horn solo, and a return to the notion of human fallibility, but this time in extended form. Again there is a build toward chaos, and the music becomes more complex and textured, reflecting the complexity of the human journey. The work ends somewhat abruptly with a blaze, leaving the listener with a sense of both hope and uncertainty. Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilaratingwork was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring the solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations.
