Smoke Sketches is Daniel Hall's first original work to be published in the Faber Music Brass Band Series. Daniel is one of the most gifted of the rising generation of composers writing for brass bands. Smoke Sketches was composed at the invitation of Brass Bands England for the Intermediate Section of the 2017 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.This colourful, jazzy suite draws inspiration from the ancient art of gazing into smoke from fire to find stories through the act of divination. Into the Blaze suggests someone briskly fire-walking, barefoot, with unexpected sparks fizzling from the ground. A Lonesome Ember captures the fleeting life of a small ember, beginning insignificantly and gradually evolving into a larger being before disappearing into ash, while Spark of Light bristles with life and energy.Band Grade 3/4, duration 8 minutes.

I was contacted by conductor and friend Desmond Graham who wanted to have a traditional concert march composed to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his band; The Third Carrickfergus Band.Immediately my mind started wandering as I thought about all the great marches that I have enjoyed playing and listening to over the years. So when I put pen to paper I had already planned out the structure of the march and which instruments to feature.The march itself is split into two halves, the first in a minor key the second in a major key. The opening section starting loudly in F minor features stereotypical passages one would come to recognise in a traditional concert march: a cornet solo, a melodic bridging section and a robust bass solo led by the basses and trombones.The second half of the march changes pace and mood as it lifts into a major key giving it a more lighter feel. We hear a second cornet solo which plays the second theme of the march. After a second bridge section the theme is played by the front row cornets to allow the soprano to play an obligato melody similar to that heard in marches like "Army of the Nile" and "Stars and Stripes Forever". It all builds to a grandioso ending where the tempo drops and the final theme is played with a quick accel to the end.As for the title? In Carrickfergus lies an old castle that faces the town which is situated on a small plot of luscious green grass - "On The Castle Green".Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This march was written in 1888 and dedicated to the US Marine Corps, later being adopted as its official march. At the time of its composition Sousa was director of the US Marine Band.This brass band version contains a small amount of optional movement around the stage and a percussion feature. These will enhance the presentation.The arrangement was prepared for the Summer concerts presented by Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Keith M Wilkinson, in 2008.

£44.12Boreas: The North Wind (Brass Band) Derek Jenkins
Boreas was an ancient Greek deity personifying the north wind. He was a winged god of ruthless disposition, which was rivaled only by the harsh wintry winds at his command. Boreas fell in love with Orithyia, the King's daughter. Contrary to his genuine nature, he attempted to woo her with sweet words of devotion. His efforts were in vain, and Orithyia failed to yield to his advances. With this rejection, Boreas's temper flared and he, once again, was overcome by his icy and merciless nature. Like Boreas, this work begins with slow, lyrical lines that quickly fade into an unrelenting fury of anger. Moments reminiscent of Boreas's words of affection appear, but they are quickly washed away as the piece escalates. This arrangement was written for Joseph Parisi and the Fountain City Brass Band as a small token of thanks. The original version for wind ensemble was commissioned by and written for Timothy Shade and the Bethel College Wind Ensemble. £42.00Silent Night. Franz Gruber arranged for brass band by Andrew Duncan
Silent Night is an Austrian Christmas Carol written by Franz Gruber, (1787-1863). Franz Gruber was an primary school teacher, organist and composer who lived in the village of Arndorf in Austria. Silent Night (Stille Nacht) has become one of the best loved Christmas Carols ever written. This arrangement for brass band imagines Christmas morning in a small Austrian village, such as Arndorf, with the sound of the local church bells ringing out along with the sound of a choir singing Silent Night accompanied by the local band.. The arrangement features the tubular bells playing a simple descending scale, which is also played by muted cornets (2nd and 3rd cornets). After 2 verses of the hymn the coda features a short trombone trio with a jazzy feel which leads into a final scale from the tubular bells and cornets bringing the piece to a peaceful close. 1387: March - Temple Foundations (Stephen Gibson)This march was composed for the Newcastle City Temple Band for the official opening of their new church buildings. It features several musical references (Showers of blessing (T.B. 411), I would be thy holy temple (S.A.S.B. 591), Come, ye thankful people, come (S.A.S.B. 9), All the promises of God are sure (S.A.S.B. 893) and Count your blessings (T.B. 183)), opening with the announcement that 'With timbrel and drum, and with flags they come' (N.S.Y.P. January 1977) to commence worship and witness in a new area of the city.1388: Holy Forever (arr. Marcus Venables)This is an arrangement of the popular worship song, written by Brian Johnson, Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Jenn Johnson and Phil Wickham.1389: Goodness of God (arr. Paul Sharman) This is an arrangement of the well-known worship song, written by Ben Fielding, Brian Johnson, Ed Cash, Jason Ingram and Jenn Johnson.1390: The first Nowell (Noel Jones)This is an arrangement of the beautiful carol The first Nowell (C.C. 86). It commences with the motif 'Born is the King' which which is referenced throughout the work and the finishes with the spirited 'Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel'.1391: Gloria a Dios (Ian Clarke)Translated into English, the Spanish phrase 'Gloria a Dios' means 'Glory to God'. The style of this music has its roots in the small musical combinations that entertain the crowds in some Latin American towns and villages (many of which are Spanish speaking, hence the title). Once a melodic idea had taken hold, the chorus Jesus saves me now! (S.A.S.B. 478) seemed to fit perfectly, the words and the music complementing each other in this testament of praise.

3rd Section Test Piece 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship.The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon.
