£37.35Nicaea - Band Warm-up (Brass Band) John Bacchus Dykes arr. Steve Kellner
This warm-up is designed to help players and conductors hear and improve section, group, and full band intonation, rhythmic precision, and balance in an efficient and musically satisfying way. The tune Nicaea was selected because of its easy-to-hear triads and intervals, and the harmonisation used throughout is purposely simple and consistent, so that the players can become very familiar with potential intonation trouble spots. Likewise, discrepancies in precision and balance will easily be heard. Keys have been carefully selected to expose specific intonation problems within the sections and groups, like the overlap between Eb and Bb instruments in the horns/baritones and later in euphoniums/basses, and 5th position tuning in the trombones. The format in sections 2 through 5 is consistent, beginning with a single section of the band playing in unison, then expanding into two-part and four-part harmony. After eight bars that section is joined by another section or sections to form a common multi-section group used in brass band scoring, such as the 'mellow choir', 'low brass', 'tuba-euphonium choir', and 'bright choir'. Section 6 features the two largest groupings, the 'all but cornets' and 'high brass'. Section 7 brings the whole band together for a majestic and powerful finish. £37.35Polonaise from 'Scenes de Ballet' (Brass Band) Glazunov arr. Rob Bushnell
Alexander Glazunov was a Russian composer who was a gifted musician from childhood. He was seen as the natural heir to the nationalist revolution that had started with the Mighty Handful. Despite quickly turning from this to absolute forms of music, taking a keen interest in ballet music, his compositions still alludes to Russian folk tunes. He wrote four dance compositions, of which Scenes de Ballet was the first in 1894. The suite Scenes de Ballet, opus 52 has eight movements and was dedicated to the orchestra of the Russian Opera, St Petersburg. First performed in 1895 at a concert of the Imperial Music Society with Glazunov conducting. This arrangement of the final movement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Three for Christmas! is a sparky number by the revered composer Kenneth Downie based on three much-loved carols. The work opens with a bright and joyful rendition of the Sussex Carol, which is quickly followed by a more reflective and tender setting of Away in a Manger, featuring solo cornet, flugel and trombone. The third movement is a lively and upbeat version of Iris, which brings the piece to a triumphant conclusion. £59.77Variations on 'Sine Nomine' (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This magnificent work was written in 2019 for the London Central Fellowship Band and Bandmaster David Rudd. It is based on the hymn tune by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which is also known as For all the Saints. Its release in the summer of 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth. The work is set in four contrasting movements, which follow an opening statement of the hymn in its full form. Variation I (Leggiero) is based on the first few notes of the chorale and is lively and sprightly in nature, with regular time changes permeating throughout. There are regular statements of the hymn, with the movement closing with a full statement of the tune in its full glory. Variation II (Andante Espressivo) derives its material from the final strain of the verse. The music is generally calm and ethereal in nature before building to an impassioned fortissimo featuring the full band, and finally dying away. Variation III (Allegro Vivace) is in compound time and, like Variation I, is based on the first few notes of the hymn. The music is joyful and playful, epitomised by syncopated rhythms, and snippets of the tune are heard throughout. Variation IV (Allegro Giocoso) is in the form of a fugue which commences with the cornets, before the theme is handed to each section of the band at various points. After several statements of the theme, the music grows into the final strain of the chorale, which is given a grandiose setting. A frenzied Presto coda leads into organ-like chords, before a series of upward major scales bring the work to its final chord. COMPOSER: Mike Moran & Freddie MercuryARRANGER: David Beal"Barcelona" is a single released by Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury and operatic soprano Montserrat Caballe. A part of their collaborative album Barcelona, it also appeared on Queen's Greatest Hits III. The song reflects Mercury's love of opera with his high notes and Caballe's operatic vocals, backed by a full orchestra. Originally released in 1987, it was one of the biggest hits of Mercury's solo career, reaching number eight in the UK singles chart. After Mercury's death in 1991, it was featured at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The single was re-issued on 20 July 1992, after which the track climbed even higher, peaking at number two in the UK, the Netherlands and New Zealand. In 2004, BBC Radio 2 listed Barcelona at number 41 in its Sold On Song Top 100.Scored here for British Brass Band.
