A Little Prayer - Evelyn Glennie - Robert Childs

Originally composed for solo marimba, this popular version of A Little Prayer was made in 1998 following Evelyn Glennie's collaboration with Black Dyke Band during the recording of their Grammy nominated Reflected in Brass CD. Robert Childs, then principal euphonium with Black Dyke, requested Evelyn's permission to make the arrangement for his son, David. The composer obliged, and Robert presented the score and parts to his son as a seventeenth birthday present.Evelyn Glennie revealed: "When I wrote this chorale for marimba, it expressed my spiritual feelings and displayed a pleasantly relaxed dimension of the instrument. Over the years my exposure to brass bands has filled me with wonder; their musical diversity is considerable. I had no hesitation in giving A Little Prayer to Robert Childs to bring this little melody to life."Having composed the work when she was only 13, Evelyn continued: "As a child I would never have believed that such a short and simple piece of music, would come to grow this much. A little Prayerserves to prove that one should always bet their chips on what they believe in, for nine out of ten it will be worth it!"After twenty years of exclusivity, Prima Vista Musikk is proud to make this beautiful arrangement available to all. A Little Prayer provides the perfect reflective interlude for concert or devotional use by euphonium soloists and bands of all abilities.

For the Fallen - Karl Jenkins - Robert Childs

Ruslan & Ludmilla - Mikhail Glinka - Robert Childs

Glinka's Ruslan & Ludmilla was first performed on December 9, 1842, in St.Petersburg.Once a popular and influential composer, Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) is primarily remembered today for two operas: A Life for the Tsar (1836) and Ruslan and Ludmilla (1842). The latter, based on the work that brought poet Alexander Pushkin his first success in 1820, seems both a perfect operatic subject and an impossibility.A complicated fairy tale of love overcoming all obstacles, it features a flying dwarf who gets his power from his beard, a fight with a giant disembodied head, a rescue foiled, a slain hero resurrected, and a happy ending with the lovers reunited!Glinka worked intermittently on the Opera for five years and left the composition of the overture to the last minute. Despite the inventiveness of the music and its many memorable melodies, the Opera Ruslan and Ludmilla was a failure. Nevertheless the Overture is a firm favourite and here we have an expertly crafted arrangement for brass band from the pen of Dr Robert Childs.

Suite from Stabat Mater - Karl Jenkins - Andrew Wainwright / Robert Childs

The World premiere performance of Karl Jenkins' Stabat Mater took place on March 15th 2008 in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir conducted by the composer.Stabat Mater is a 13th Century Roman Catholic poem attributed to Jacopone da Todi. Its title is an abbreviation of the first line, Stabat mater dolorosa ('The sorrowful mother was standing') This text, one of the most powerful and immediate of medieval poems, meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. It has been set to music by many composers, among them Haydn, Dvork, Vivaldi, Rossini, Pergolesi, Gounod, Penderecki, Poulenc Szymanowski, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico Scarlatti and Verdi. Here we have three movements from Karl's setting of Stabat Mater to form a wonderful suite for brass band;ISancta Mater IICantus LacrimosusIIIParadisi GloriaMovements I and III feature antiphonal writing for cornets (group A and group B) whilst movement II opens with a quartet playing together at the side of the stage, before taking positions at the front of the stage.Performance layout based on traditional band formation: Flugel and horns should sit in the solo cornets seats, basses should sit in the horn seats, euphonium and baritones remain why they usually are. Trombones should stand a central position behind the basses and in front of percussion whilst cornets (divided as indicated on the score) take standing positions, one group behind the horns and the second group behind the baritones and euphoniums. This suite can be augmented with the inclusion of the euphonium solo Lament from Stabat Mater and the cornet solo / duet Ave Verum from Stabat Mater. If using one of these it should be played following Cantus Lacrimosus. If using both Lament should be played after Sancta Mater and Ave Verum after the Cantus Lacrimosus. All of this music can be heard performed by Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs on the Doyen CD 'Cory in Concert - Volume II'

The Liberty Bell - John Philip Sousa - Robert Childs

The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American Independence. The actual bell was commissioned from the London firm, now known as, Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1752 and was cast with the inscription:"Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof"The bell was placed originally in the steeple of Independence Hall in Pennsylvania and historically cracked the first time it was rung.Interest in the bell heightened across America in 1847 when it was claimed the bell was rung on the 4th July 1776 upon hearing the Second Continental Congress's vote for Independence. Despite the fact that this is undocumented and it is highly unlikely that the bell was actually struck on this date as it was in storage, the story was widely accepted and the bell was exhibited for many years at various expositions and patriotic gatherings across the United States.John Philip Sousa originally composed the march as part of an operetta score called, "The Devils Deputy" which, due to a lack of financing, was never completed. Sousa's manager George Hinton however, encouraged him to publish some of the music from the operetta as concert items, including the title-less march. While Sousa and his manager were attending the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, they watched a patriotic spectacle called "America" where the Liberty Bell was presented to the audience. Sousa's manager suggested that this would be a suitable title for Sousa's new march, to which Sousa agreed. This classic American march has been superbly arranged here for brass band by Dr. Robert Childs.
