Concerto for Tenor Horn - Gareth Wood

Gareth Wood's Concerto for Tenor Horn was commissioned by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation with additional funding from the Arts Council of Wales and the PRS Foundation. The work was written for Owen Farr and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. It is in a traditional three movement form demonstrating the agility and lyricism of the tenor horn. The soloist begins alone with a singing melody in 5/4 time, and is soon joined by the Eb tuba and solo cornet. The rest of the band later emerge, leading the music into a strident Allegro. After a short tutti the soloist takes charge and a dialogue of melodic and rhythmic ideas follows. After a brief return to the opening theme the movement closes with a flourish. The second movement is a true Adagio. A profound beginning, almost hymn like, leads into a gentle melody which builds into a large tutti for band. A rhythmic section follows, rhapsodic in nature ending in a return to the melody used at the very beginning of the concerto. After another short tutti section the movement gently fades away. The finale is a combination of technical fireworks and an almost latin melody, both soloist and band finishing with great aplomb!Gareth Wood's Concerto for Tenor Horn received its world premiere by Owen Farr and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales under the direction of Dr. Robert Childs during their Summer Course of 2006 at Bangor University's Pritchard-Jones Concert Hall, North Wales.

It Takes Two from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

It Takes Two is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. It Takes Two, which would normally form the third movement of the concerto, is an improvisatory style for the soloist. The music is in the form of a habanera style tango with the euphonium 'partnering' a number of instruments in the ensemble while 'breaking away' from time to time in rolling roulades. A judicious use of multi-phonics rounds off the coda.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."It Takes Two for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. Orchestral and wind band versions are available from Boosey and Hawkes.

Romanza from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

Romanza is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.Romanza, which would normally form the second movement of the concerto, is reminiscent of Jenkin's Benedictus from The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. It is simple music, one might almost say innocent and naive, celebrating conjuct melodic shapes with light harmonic accompaniment in the spirit of a tranquil folk-meditation.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. The Juggler from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

The Juggler is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. The Juggler, would normally form the first movement of the concerto, but it stands alone very well as an individual work for euphonium and band. The music is episodic beginning with with a minimalist texture over which the euphonium "tweets" three short calls before riffing around. It is broken up by a 'circus waltz' exploiting the agility and vituosity of the euphonium in a fun context. On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."The Juggler for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. The Lost Chord - Arthur Sullivan - Robert Childs

Sullivan composed The Lost Chord whilst watching at his brother Fred's bedside during his last illness. The manuscript is dated 13th January 1877, five days before his brother's death. He had been trying to set the words of Adelaide Procter to music for several years, but did not succeed until faced with Fred's passing. The success of the song was immediate. None other than the Prince of Wales was said to have remarked that he would travel the length of his future kingdom to hear it sung. Sullivan later commented: 'I have composed much music since then, but have never written a second Lost Chord'. This arrangement for Solo Euphonium and Brass Band is featured on David Childs's third solo album, Hear My Prayer (DOYCD166).
