North of England Folk Song Suite | trad. arr. Alwyn Green

An excellent concert piece of three traditional but contrasting songs, a love poem, a song of longing and loss, and a quick jaunty celebration of traditional life. The Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill from Yorkshire is a love ballad. The lass is Frances l'Anson, whose parents disapproved of her chosen love, and the couple eloped. The piece popularised the poetic phrase - A Rose without a Thorn. The Oak and the Ash from Lancashire is a traditional song comparing town and country life - a very popular theme in the 17th century. A girl from the North of England has moved to London to find a husband, but she is lonely in the city and wishes she could be home again - 'O the Oak and the Ash and the bonny Elum tree, they're all growing green in the North Country'The Keel Row from Northumberland is a traditional folk song evoking the life and work of the Keelmen of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and with it's quick light beat it is used as the trot march for the Life Guards and the Royal Horse Artillery.InstrumentationSoprano, Solo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd Baritone1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEuphoniumEb and Bb BassesPercussion parts (2):1: Timpani, Glockenspiel, Cymbal, Sleigh Bells, Maracas2: Drum Kit, Gong, Side DrumISMN: 979-0-708127-02-4

    Supernova - Andrew Stevenson

A supernova is a stellar explosion that emits as much energy as the sun will emit in its lifespan. Supernovae are extremely luminous and cause a burst of radiation that often briefly outshines an entire galaxy, before fading from view over several weeks or months. The music in Supernova portrays the life of the phenomena. It starts with an explosion of sound from the percussion and the excitement builds into letter A, where the real energy is unleashed. Separate layers create the idea of energetic chaos as the explosion and energy expand. The music slows down towards the middle, showing the decay of the supernova, and moves into another quick section that symbolises the creation of another explosion. Three broad melodies then take the piece to its final conclusion.

Brass Quintet No. 1 - Andrew Stevenson

Brass Quintet No. 1 was written for the Ewald Brass Quintet, a group of first year musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. The piece is in three movements in the typical fast-slow-fast structure. The first movement is the hardest of the 3, the quick tempo and multiple time changes make the music tricky but very exciting. The second movement is a slow melodic movement, packed with emotion and opportunities for ensembles to add their own musicality to it.The third movement goes through many different styles and gives every player a chance to show their technical abilities and melodic playing.

    Kopanitsa

Kopanitsa was commissioned by Gavin Pritchard, who is also the work's dedicatee and gave the first performance with the Tongwynlais Temperance Band conducted by Gareth Pritchard at the Butlins Mineworkers Championship on 20 January 2008, winning the prize for best soloist as a result. He has recorded it on the CD "Enter the Galaxies" accompanied by the Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs.Gavin had requested a virtuoso showpiece featuring as many instruments as possible. The solo part is therefore written for vibraphone (bowed and struck), 10 x tuned tom toms, 5 x suspended cymbals plus hi-hat and a xylophone. The soloist's 'choreography' therefore forms an integral part of the performance. This can be seen to great effect in Gavin's performance of the work at the 2013 Brass in Concert Championship with Tredegar Band, available on the DVD of the event from World of Brass. A 'kopanitsa' is a Bulgarian folk dance that traditionally features two slow beats and two quick beats, reflected in the central 10/8 section. The music is deliberately Balkan in character, using the characteristic modes of Greek and Bulgarian folk music, and accelerates regularly to finish at breakneck speed. The tom-tom section marked 'ad lib.' after [D] can be improvised if the soloist wishes. You can view a sample PDF file of the score here and the solo percussion part here.

LIFESTREAM (Brass Band Set) - Ralph Pearce

This march is modelled on the well-known American quick march called Midwest by J.J. Richards. The melody of the second subject is by the Danish hymn-writer, Sophie Hedvig Dedakam and is associated with words by Major Clara Vint who helped to establish En Evant, the French War Cry. The title of the march is derived from the text of the song.
