    Admiral Spirit - Timothy Travis

The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea, there is no wind, the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante), the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. He may be proud of his flagship.

    Enchanted Wales

In 1993, I was asked to provide some background music for a ten minute promotional film, showing some of the beautiful landscape of the country in which I was born, Wales. I chose “Men of Harlech”, “The Ash Grove”, and “Land of my Fathers”, and ‘electronically’ produced some music. As a lover of brass bands and male voice choirs, I decided to arrange this music for that combination. The ‘male voice choir’ and ‘Welsh harp’ parts are optional, to enhance what already aims to be a ‘proud’ arrangement which says “This is Wales”. The piece begins with a glorious fanfare, which leads us into “Men of Harlech”. Next, we hear the beautiful “Ash Grove”. After this, we come to the grand finale, “Land of my Fathers”. This piece requires solid, tight performance. The glock part is important, and there is a fairly demanding obligato duet in Ash Grove for soprano and principal cornets.

Excelsior - Fanfare and Theme - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The New Mills Old Prize Band is the inheritor of a proud tradition going back 200 years. Its origin lies in a brass and reed band formed in 1812 by Timothy Beard and it is one of the oldest brass bands in continuous existence in the UK.The New Mills Old Prize Band is inextricably linked to the Beard family. Timothy Beard the founder of the band, was one of five children and two of his brothers, John and Stephen, were to join him in the band.Excelsior is based on the hymn tune ‘Ransom’ believed to have been composed in 1838 by Timothy’s brother Stephen Beard. I have taken this hymn tune and composed a concert fanfare utilising the main melodic material from the original hymn tune. The title of the piece comes from the bands original motto “Excelsior!”Paul Lovatt-Cooper

St. Andrew's Variations - Alan Fernie

This piece, written for the East Anglian Brass Band Festival in 1998, takes the form of eight variations and a finale, loosely based on the descending third motif heard in the initial theme. It was initially composed for junior band, and expanded and rescored for full band in 2006. There is no significance in the title, other than the fact it was written by a Scotsman to be played in the St Andrew’s Hall, in Norwich!Alan Fernie was born and brought up in the Scots mining village of Newtongrange. From the age of 13 he learned to play the trombone both at school and with the local brass band, going on to study music in Glasgow and London. After a short period working as an orchestral musician, Alan moved into instrumental education, spending over 20 years teaching brass in schools all over the East of Scotland. It was during this time that he began to conduct and he has since directed bands at all levels, winning many awards. He first wrote for brass whilst still a student, and his music is now played, recorded and published throughout the world. In 2009, Alan was honoured with the “President’s Award” from the Scottish Brass Band Association for services to banding. He is also proud to be associated as composer in residence with the acclaimed charity “Brass for Africa”, with whom he spent two months recently teaching in Kampala, Uganda. Living in the Scottish Borders, Alan now works as a freelance musician, finding time to write, teach, conduct, judge, perform and act as compere throughout the UK and beyond.
