Originally part of the score Walton wrote for the film The First of the Few, this fabulous music found greater fame in the concert version he made in 1942. Now, at last, here is an authorised version for brass band by an acknowledged master of the art, Elgar Howarth. The Prelude - essentially a march in his best Crown Imperial style leads to a dazzling Fugue which incorporates a quiet interlude before the dramatic finale. An arrangement by Tim Paton of this Rachmaninoff favourite for brass band.Comments from Tim:I first heard the Rachmaninoff Prelude in G minor when my brother, (Dr) Rod Paton, used to play it on the piano. The martial sound of the opening theme caught my imagination, and I knew then that this piece would sound magnificent if played by a brass band - if you like the music of Rachmaninoff, then you will love this piece! That spectacular sound that we all know, with busy, melodic bass lines, and a middle section in his well known 'romantic' style - I could already hear the euphonium playing those rippling arpeggios. In response to the enthusiasm for this magnificent piece, I have lightheartedly commented that maybe he wrote it for brass band, but there wasn't one available, so he did it for piano instead!Look and Listen (Score-reading digital sound sample):

£33.51Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Brass Band) Rachmaninoff arr. Rob Bushnell
One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions, Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3, No. 2) is part of a set of five pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie. It was written when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old and was first performance by the composer on 26 September 1892 at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been transposed from the original (for piano) of C-sharp minor to A minor, which better suits a brass band. There is another arrangement of this piece by Sandy Smith (published by Obrasso) which is designed for more advanced ensembles. Purple Prelude
Purple Prelude was composed in 2017 by Ian Raisbeck for the Lions Youth Brass - the title, reflecting the colours of the band uniforms. The piece features 3 contrasting themes; the first a fanfare style opening full of pomp and ceremony, the second idea is a lively and rhythmical section giving the percussion players some latin inspired rhythms to fit the driving syncopated accompaniment rhythms.

Prelude and Scherzo
Prelude and Scherzo was composed for Jackie Greenstead, Solo Horn of the Thoresby Colliery Band. As the title suggests the piece is in two movements: the first is a lyrical melody, sparse at first that culminates in a radiant full band reprise. DURATION: 6 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. Prelude on george Butterworth was composed as the prologue to the special Duhram Hymns event, alongside music by Orlando Gough and Jessica Curry, whilst using text by Carol Ann Duffy. The premiere performance took place in a packed Durham Cathedral, with the music for this pieces inspired by Durham Light Infantry soldier and renowned composer George Butterworth.
