    Bass Trombone Concerto

Written in 2006 for Roger Argente, Gareth Wood brings his considerable experience of writing for brass, and brass bands in particular, to an instrument not often blessed with opportunities for solo exposure. It is scored for soloist accompanied by traditional brass band line-up, including timpani and two percussion, and follows the standard three-movement pattern. In the first movement, the soloist launches straight into the musical argument with a low-lying repeated quaver figure punctuated by the band. A lyrical second subject in the high register is also entrusted to the soloist, and the movement comes to a thrilling conclusion. The slow movement opens softly with the percussion, and a mournful bass line sets the mood for a thoughtful long melody. It reaches a powerful climax, which subsides to a return of the opening mood. In the march-like finale, the soloist is pitted against a number of solo instruments from the band and a driving ostinato carries the momentum through to the blazing ending.Duration: 13:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, bongos, bass drum, side drum, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, claves, triangle, tambourine, xylophone and glockenspielGrade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands

    La Perla Negra

For this brooding piece the composer has used the following storyline. “A sad elderly man sits alone in a bar whilst an accordionist plays a slow tango. A beautiful woman walks in wearing a single black pearl necklace and proceeds to dance with the old man. Gradually the music becomes more and more spirited and the dance faster as the old man becomes youthful again. With a passionate kiss he passes out in the girls arms and when he awakens he is back in the bar alone save for the accordionist. As he contemplates his dream he notices a single black pearl left behind on the bar. The sombre mood is lightened in the middle section by a deliberately trite and vibrato fuelled section, but we soon return to the opening material for a slow fade-out” Composer Colin Skinner wrote this piece especially for Superbrass’ debut CD “Under the Spell of Spain”.Duration: 6.30 minutesPercussion: 4 players playing drum kit, maracas, xylophone, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel, claves, castanets and marimba.Grade 3: Medium 1st and 2nd Section Bands

    Orion - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Orion was named after the giant huntsman in Greek mythology and is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the most conspicuous and recognisable constellations in the night sky. This piece and its inspiration were composed as a tone poem creating a musical picture of this amazing phenomenon. The opening introduces the constellation. Starting mysteriously with the percussion and basses this section develops a series of rhythmic and harmonic interludes from the upper brass. As this introduction develops, the melodic line lead by the Solo Cornet and Euphonium builds as the accompanying instruments increase in their rhythmic complexity. This section climaxes with a short fanfare motif which will be a prominent theme throughout this piece. The fast rhythmic section that follows serves as a technical test for the players. The thematic device introduced by the Solo Cornets is passed around various soloists and sections within the ensemble. This part of the tone poem gives the opportunity for the ensemble to highlight their technical prowess. The fanfare motif returns to conclude this section and takes the piece into the slow middle movement.Motifs heard earlier are mixed with new ideas in this slow section which give an opportunity for a variety of soloists to demonstrate their musical prowess. After the various solo passages and cadenzas, the mood shifts dramatically to a more ominous section that builds in texture and dynamic. Concluding with our returning fanfare motif the piece then builds in momentum towards our finale section. This finale is a technical showcase which will further test the playing ability and stamina of soloists, small groups and the full ensemble. Using prominent musical themes heard throughout this piece the music builds to a glorious conclusion fitting with wonderful constellation.

    Set To

“Set To” is dedicated to London Brass and arranged for brass band by Christopher Houlding. It was commissioned by the Aldeburgh Foundation and received its first performance on August 24th 1993 at the Maltings, Snape. Originally divided into two movements, a pensive and richly harmonic Blues and an aptly named Bacchanale, sometimes slow but mostly fast and furious. “I remember playing the original brass ensemble version of “Set To” numerous times in the early nineties with London Brass and always wondered if the composer would consider writing something for Brass Band. As Director of The Guildhall Brass Band, a possible performance opportunity arose in 2010 and I successfully approached Mark and gained his permission to scale it up for brass band with added percussion parts. I conducted the premier of this new Brass Band version at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in February 2011 with the composer present and he liked it. Although very contemporary compared to most brass music, I feel that Mark's easily accessible style makes this rhythmically quirky and harmonically 'bluesy' work a really interesting concert piece, suitable for any occasion” - Chris Houlding.Duration: 7:30 minutesPercussion: 3 players playing timpani, suspended cymbal, snare drum, hi-hat, triangle, claves, glockenspiel, vibraslap, xylophone, egg shaker, cowbell, temple blocks, wood blocks and lions roar.Grade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

Dances and Arias - Edward Gregson

This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance – Aria I – Dance (scherzo) – Aria II – Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation. The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.

    Eire Time - Andrea Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 3 (Soloist 5) A virtuosic euphonium solo with a celtic flavour by Andrea Price. Composed in 2014 for Black Dyke principle euphonium Gary Curtin, Eire Time weaves together three traditional Irish folk tunes in a lively and virtuosic celebration of all things Irish. The piece opens with Star of Munster, a playful but tricky reel with a real foot-tapping lilt to the accompanying parts. The middle movement, The Leaving of Liverpool, is a lyrical slow melody that tells of travel and homesickness and here the band sensitively supports the soloists soaring countermelody. A percussion interlude leads us into the finale, a fast romp through the fiendishly difficult Drowsy Maggie, a real classic of the genre. Duration: 00:05:00

    Scarborough Fair - Andrea Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 4.5 (Soloist 6) A new take on an old favourite for Marimba / Xylophone and Brass Band by Andrea Price. The beautiful lilting melody of Scarborough Fair has been expertly woven through contrasting sections of this piece, and unlike most percussion solos there is a chance for the performer to demonstrate their slow lyrical playing as well as their technical wizardry. Scarborough Fair was premiered in the gala concert at the 2014 German Brass Band Championship, with the composer as the soloist accompanied by the Black Dyke Band. The solo can be played on either xylophone, marimba or both and requires good technique and stamina in both four and two mallet disciplines.

    Inter-Pop - Kees Vlak

Five movements in techno-pop style. The work begins with Rock March with a few pithy chords over a driving percussion accompaniment. Feeling Free is a slow ballad. Rockarab is devoted to 'the ship of the desert', the camel. Little Chi Yan is a very charming, romantic song for a sweet little girl. In Disco Lights, we hear the stirring sounds of drums and bass guitar while the lights flash in the crowded discotheque.
