Abide with me for euphonium and brass band, arr. Paul McGhee

Paul McGhee made this haunting arrangement of W.H. Monk's famous hymn tune for the young Belgianstar of the euphonium Glenn Van Looy, who performed it on 27 January 2013 at the Royal NorthernCollege of Music Festival of Brass, with the Leyland Band conducted by Michael Bach. Surrounding thethree verses of the solo line are wisps of texture, irregular rhythms and colours form brass andpercussion, giving the music an unsettled feel. Abide with me is a favourite of Paul McGhee, who says“When watching the film 28 Days Later I thought it would make a rather striking arrangement for brassband. This was confirmed further when the hymn was used at the 2012 opening ceremony of the LondonOlympics. The contrast between the static, slow moving melody and the rhythmic effects of the dancerswas something that I thought could be captured in an arrangement.”Grade 4 (soloist 5)Duration 5 mins?35 plus postage and packing

    Paul McGhee: Kjeden

Subtitled dialogue for Euphonium and Brass Band, Kjeden aims to explore the relationship between soloist and ensemble. The ensemble, rather than merely accompanying; interacts with the soloist and creates soundscapes which become the backdrop for the soloists extended passages. Many instruments from the ensemble become lead lines in the material and there is a constant dialogue between the instruments as each fights for importance. Using the idea of a chain the five sections of the piece are interlinked and the point where one ends and another begins is often blurred and distorted. Each section emerges from the material which precedes it and constantly gives reminders of what has gone before as well as introducing new material.Dance like passages and fast rhythmical sections flow in and out and morph into musical ideas of highly differing character with contrast being the primal element which propels the music and creates momentum. Although the music draws to a definite conclusion, the re-introduction at the end of the piece of motifs and moods that occur at the beginning of the work mean that the music comes full circle, finishing where it began. Indeed, it is the intention that the music in fact has no ending and is to be played on a loop continuously; further blurring the boundaries and becoming an unbroken chain of material.A recording of Kjeden can be heard below (from Paul’s Soundcloud page)and you can see a preview of the solo part here.Duration: c.21 minutes

Waiting for a Pain Hit!??!!? - Paul McGhee

Waiting For a Pain Hit!??!!? was written during November and December 2006 as an entry in the 2006/07 Swiss Brass Band Association Composers Competition. It was later chosen as the Championship Section set test piece for the 2010 Swiss National Brass Band Championships. The piece originates from sketches for a Brass Quintet which was written whilst I was in my second year of studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The piece, now being much more elaborate both musically and structurally than the original, aims to explore the many various textures available to a large brass ensemble. The aims of the piece, from its earliest stages, were mainly exploration of textures as well as dealing with issues of continuity and whilst the piece certainly contains challenging technical elements, they were not a driving force behind its inception and more organically grew from the primary aims of the piece. I was purposefully looking throughout the writing and editing process to create a piece of music with a seamless, ethereal quality to both the structure and the musical content. There are no 'performance directions' throughout the piece, the reasoning for this is explained below. However, I have spent much time and thought over the tempo markings throughout the piece and the tempos throughout the piece are the desired tempi and care should be taken with these. The tempo markings contained throughout the piece form a vital part of the structure and affect the continuity of the piece. Metronome marks contained within a box show the tempo of the new section in relation to the tempo that precedes it by use of metronome modulations. Any alterations tothe tempo of the section that precedes it will alter the boxed metronome marks. The title of a piece of music, please forgive my generalisation, is to give an insight into 'what a piece is about'. I suppose that this piece is no different, but with the title being slightly abstract I shall resist the temptation to reveal what it means to me. The title, I feel, needs to be open to interpretation along with the music within. That's the way, with this piece especially, I like my music to be. Freedom to find our own meaning and a way to express it from within the score is vital. It is only then that the piece can take on its own identity and grow in ways that even I might not have imagined, revealing different sides to its personality with each performance. Before the music begins I have included some text. Do these words hold the key to the music?! Can they help??!I DON'T KNOW!!!I just like the rhythms, the pulse and the imagery. Hopefully all of this can help to create a picture. But let it be your picture...Paul McGhee, June 2010.

Monet on the Embankment - Paul McGhee

Monet on the Embankment was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's performance at Brass in Concert 2014, where it received the prize for best new composition/arrangement.Monet on the Embankment takes Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament collection as it's inspiration, a total of nineteen canvases, which were the same scene - all studies in changing landscapes. While the Parliament series has Westminister Palace, it is so distorted by the fog and smog that it becomes secondary as the subject - as we see not just the effect of light on objects but also the effect of light on the atmosphere itself. It is these distortions of light that the I have aimed to create in my piece, by using muted effects, various percussion instruments, extreme registers and dynamics as well as incorporating quarter-tones to further distort the harmonic picture. Whilst looking to the past for inspiration through Mussorgsky's 'Promenade', the music most definitely looks to the future, aiming to place the setting for Monet's masterpiece's firmly in the present.Paul McGhee

    Diversions after Benjamin Britten

Aria - His Depth LUCY PANKHURST Scherzo - His Vitality SIMON DOBSON March - His Sympathy PAUL McGHEE Toccata - His Skill GAVIN HIGGINS Diversions after Benjamin Britten was devoted by Paul Hindmarsh as a centenary tribute to Britain's foremost composer of the 20th century. It is a companion piece to Variations on a Theme of Michel Tippett, although in this case the theme is not musical, but the composer himself. The four leading young composers were invited to create their own personal reflections on four aspects of Britten's character. His Depth refers to the emotional and symbolic subtexts underpinning Britten's operas. His Vitality reminds us that Britten loved tennis and fast cars in his youger days. His Sympathy is ecvoative or Britten's pacifism, while His Skill pays tribute to composer's consummate creativity. At its premiere, these virtuoso inspirations were prefaced and separated by the four strains of Britten's ceremonial Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury. This design is recommended as an optional means of presenting the four contrasting movements. The fanfare is published by Boosey & Hawkes, edition. Duration: 14 mins (18 mins including Britten's Fanfare) Grade 6 Complete edition ? 85 plus postage and packing, extra scores ? 15 Separate items ? 35 each plus postage and packing PHM003

    232.778C - Paul McGhee

‘232.778?C’ was written during October 2016 and is a musical homage and reaction to Ray Bradbury’s ‘Farenheit 451’ and the illustrations of the novel by Ralph Steadman. It received its premiere on Sunday 20th November at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.‘232.778?C’ is the temperature at which paper will burn without the use of an accelerant. As the music begins with a spark the flames begin to grow, adding all that they encounter to their flame. Fire engine sirens can be heard through the mayhem and the dynamic and dissonance intensifies as the calls and screams of ‘London’s Burning’ begin to shriek from all directions. The music continues to grow in intensity until the flames have consumed everything, and all that remains are the crumbled ruins of all that was once there.

Clapp!!! - Score & Parts - Paul McGhee

'Clapp!!!!' was originally written in 2006 whilst studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and was written for two players at one piano. The music uses rhythmic phasing with each rhythm assigned it's own tone cluster - as each shift in rhythm occurs the harmonic structure is altered too. Melodic passages are created through the shifts in rhythm and harmony, but these only occur within the given rhythmic parameters. The music can very much be viewed as a study in momentum, with its unrelenting pulse driving us through the music. The Brass Band version of 'Clapp!!!!' was written for Manger Musikklag and Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen, receiving its premiere at the 2010 BrassWind Festival in Bergen, Norway. The Whitburn Band featured Clapp!!!! at their 2012 Brass in Concert programme and the piece was featured by the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band on their 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD.
