This piece was composed with the intention of replicating some of the sounds of the New Orleans Brass Bands; particularly those whose music has a funky, riff-based edge to their sound e.g. the Hot 8, Rebirth, Dirty Dozen and Soul Rebels brass bands. As well as elements of the second line parade, the music also has a full-on, swing out section.

This work is not intended to actually portray in music the events described in Genesis, Chapter 32, although the varying moods were evoked by a re-reading of the story. However, the following sequence of ideas may sometimes prove useful in presenting the work to audiences.Under Divine compulsion, Jacob sets out with Family, retainers, servants and cattle, to return to his homeland (Introduction and Sections 1 - 3).He is brought news of possible attack by his estranged brother Esau (Sections 4 - 6).Jacob seeks guidance in a lone vigil and, wrestling with a divine visitor, at last wins acceptance at the place he names Peniel--The Prince of God. The title of this piece reflects its upbeat, forward-driven character. It starts out with a soul groove, carrying a prominent theme which invites players and listeners to dance. The slower middle section features a blues with optional solo parts. After the return of the soul beat, the piece concludes with a striking reaffirmation of the initial theme. On a Roll may be performed as an effective opener or as an upbeat rhythm item during a concert or contest. On a Roll was commissioned by the Zurcher Blasmusikverband for the Zurcher Kantonalmusikfest 2024 in Urdorf/Schlieren, Switzerland.

Firestorm - Stephen Bulla
The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody, the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

In writing this piece the composer set out to emulate the sound of the Stan Kenton big band and music of that 'golden' era. The piece itself is based around two Salvation Army tunes that are associated with the word, 'salvation'; Steadily forward march! (T.B. 799) and Hark, hark, my soul (T.B.542). The music is intentionally flamboyant and requires a secure grasp of the style and rhythm to be successful. It was featured at the Belfast Temple Music School to great effect.
