£14.95HMS Indefatigable (Score Only)
HMS Indefatigable is a contest march, composed for the Virtuosi GUS Band, under the direction of Adam Cooke, and used as part of their programme for Brass in Concert in November 2016.The march is named after the battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable; an ill-fated ship of the British fleet that fell victim to German Bombardment in the Battle of Jutland, in 1916. During the initial 30 minutes of the battle, the Indefatigable sustained heavy fire from the German battleship SMS Von der Tann, which struck Indefatigable's armoury and caused the ship to suffer a catastrophic explosion, resulting in the ship sinking, with all but two lives lost. 1,017 souls perished.This piece aims to capture the might and power of the great ship at sea, incorporating a touch of menace, hinting at the unfortunate end awaiting the HMS Indefatigable, whilst serving as a fitting tribute to the ship and her crew.

Londinium was commissioned by Paul Holland and the Flowers Band as the opening item of their 2016 Brass in Concert Programme. The music portrays the roman settlement of Londinium through a series of bold, off-stage, horn and baritone calls. The music then gradually transforms into the grand modern city of London that we know today.

Pyrotechnic Variations on 1812 was composed for Brass Band Schoonhoven, and used as part of their programme for Brass in Concert in November 2016.'Pyrotechnic Variations' is a modern day twist on Tchaikovsky's famous '1812' Overture. A heraldic opening introduces some familiar themes, before leading into a frantic virtuosic passage (especially for euphonium!), where quotes can be heard all through the band. This subsides into the central 'slow' section (via the unusual route of a bass and drum kit feature). After a whisper quiet reintroduction of the main theme, we build to the 'canon' finale - ending in a glorious celebratory style!

In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. Written as a test piece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrieres, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the most momentous mining accident in Europe and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. Fraternity was the test piece in the "Champion" category at the European Brass Band Competition 2016 in Lille, thus commemorating 110 years since the disaster at Courrieres.Duration: 15:40

Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction epic Metropolis is considered to be a masterpiece of cinematic vision and a high point of German Expressionist filmmaking. Set in a future dystopian world the film introduces the viewer to two contrasting communities living in the vast city of Metropolis. Those above ground live a life of privilege and pleasure serviced by the underground-dwelling drone workers whose role is to maintain and operate the banks of machines which provide the city's power.Lang's film, which can be considered a type of 20th century morality play, draws upon a range of themes and influences from Marxist ideals and social satire to overt religious symbolism.The music does not attempt to precis the plot, such as it is, but simply reflects my musical responses to Lang's noirish visual style and set designs - the brooding machine rooms, the decadent nightclubs, the gothic cathedral and so on - paradoxically a world of terrifying beauty.Metropolis 1927 was commissioned by Bramwell Tovey and The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain with funds provided by The Arts Council of England. The first performances took place in the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 19th April and in the Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 20th April 2014.This revised version was premiered by The Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the 38th European Brass Band Championships in the Konzerthaus Freiburg, Germany, on Saturday 2 May 2015.Peter Graham
