    Lament For Audrey - Len Jenkins - Len Jenkins

    Lament for Audrey was written by Len Jenkins for the funeral of a dear friend and supporter of Woburn Sands Band, and was played to accompany the entry of her coffin. Audrey is best remembered as a character, who, like many "women of a certain age", could be quite outspoken and innocently puncture the formality of a situation without realising the humorous and endearing effect of her actions. The piece is scored for quintet and the Bb Baritone may be replaced by Bb Euphonium or Bb Trombone with a commensurate shift in overall tonal quality.

    Quintessence (Brass Quintet) - Andrew Stevenson

    Quintessence was originally written for the Quintessence Recorder Quintet in 2012, but was rescored for brass quintet shortly after. The piece is in 5 small, continuous movements:The first movement is a flowing opening with each instrument joining one at a time. The basis of the first movement is made up of mini motifs that feature elsewhere in the piece too. The second movement is a lilting fugue in a baroque style. The main melody gets transferred from player to player throughout the movement, and should be the main focal point whenever it occurs.The third movement is a gentle hymn-like passage, with the horn carrying most of the melody through the movement. The movement builds to a climatic key change before calming down once more to a soft close.The fourth movement is based on another motivic statement. This light hearted movement is tricky in places but should always feel energetic and delicate.The fifth movement is a combination of ideas from the previous movements all culminating into an exciting finale.

    Brass Quintet No. 1 - Andrew Stevenson

    Brass Quintet No. 1 was written for the Ewald Brass Quintet, a group of first year musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. The piece is in three movements in the typical fast-slow-fast structure. The first movement is the hardest of the 3, the quick tempo and multiple time changes make the music tricky but very exciting. The second movement is a slow melodic movement, packed with emotion and opportunities for ensembles to add their own musicality to it.The third movement goes through many different styles and gives every player a chance to show their technical abilities and melodic playing.

    Waiting for a Pain Hit!??!!? - Paul McGhee

    Waiting For a Pain Hit!??!!? was written during November and December 2006 as an entry in the 2006/07 Swiss Brass Band Association Composers Competition. It was later chosen as the Championship Section set test piece for the 2010 Swiss National Brass Band Championships.The piece originates from sketches for a Brass Quintet which was written whilst I was in my second year of studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The piece, now being much more elaborate both musically and structurally than the original, aims to explore the many various textures available to a large brass ensemble. The aims of the piece, from its earliest stages, were mainly exploration of textures as well as dealing with issues of continuity and whilst the piece certainly contains challenging technical elements, they were not a driving force behind its inception and more organically grew from the primary aims of the piece. I was purposefully looking throughout the writing and editing process to create a piece of music with a seamless, ethereal quality to both the structure and the musical content.There are no 'performance directions' throughout the piece, the reasoning for this is explained below. However, I have spent much time and thought over the tempo markings throughout the piece and the tempos throughout the piece are the desired tempi and care should be taken with these. The tempo markings contained throughout the piece form a vital part of the structure and affect the continuity of the piece. Metronome marks contained within a box show the tempo of the new section in relation to the tempo that precedes it by use of metronome modulations. Any alterations tothe tempo of the section that precedes it will alter the boxed metronome marks.The title of a piece of music, please forgive my generalisation, is to give an insight into 'what a piece is about'. I suppose that this piece is no different, but with the title being slightly abstract I shall resist the temptation to reveal what it means to me. The title, I feel, needs to be open to interpretation along with the music within. That's the way, with this piece especially, I like my music to be. Freedom to find our own meaning and a way to express it from within the score is vital. It is only then that the piece can take on its own identity and grow in ways that even I might not have imagined, revealing different sides to its personality with each performance.Before the music begins I have included some text. Do these words hold the key to the music?! Can they help??!I DON'T KNOW!!!I just like the rhythms, the pulse and the imagery. Hopefully all of this can help to create a picture.     Savoy Christmas Medley - Traditional - Len Jenkins based on an original arrangement by Debroy Somers

    The Savoy Christmas Medley is a well-known and often played piece originally arranged from traditional music by Debroy Somers a big-band bandleader in the 1920's. William Henry (Debroy) Somers was an ex-army bandmaster who formed the Savoy Orpheans dance band, resident at the famous Savoy Hotel between 1923 and 1927. Whilst there are several editions of this music for full Brass Band, this latest arrangement has been tailored to suit a brass quintet with optional percussion. In many cases the availability of players around the festive season, or the space to accommodate a full band in some of the venues for Christmas engagements or for fundraising, means that a Quintet can be the preferred option. In order to achieve a good Quintet arrangement, it is necessary to achieve the same quality and diversity of sound as a full band but within a smaller group. A challenging objective which we believe has been achieved in this publication. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments.

    The Lonesome Knight - Saskia Apon

    The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001. Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had been killing the people of his town. There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to find his way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon. The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more left alone. The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people. However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. In his desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off. Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between them and they build a life together and.... live happily ever after! Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition that remained her focus. Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability. At present she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble. Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music.
