Silhouette | Flugelhorn Solo | Kevin Bell

This flugelhorn feature for Brass Band highlights the warm and gentle qualities of the instrument. The melody is lyrical, but not too demanding and focuses on tone and feel - using a repeating motif as its theme with an almost fanfare, ascending opening melody line.Silhouette has a short introduction with muted cornets which sets up the back drop for the solo to play over. The background accompaniment changes as the melody continues, creating a kind of musical silhouette for the soloist to play over. The piece develops as the band takes over with layered themes, eventually returning to the soloist who brings the piece to a gentle close. An ideal solo item and concert filler.InstrumentationSoprano, Solo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd Baritone1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEuphoniumEb and Bb BassesPercussion parts (4):1: Timpani2: Drum kit3: Vibraphone, Glockenspiel4: Tubular Bells, TriangleISMN: 979-0-708127-06-2

Skye Boat Song | Tenor Horn Solo | Trad. arr. Max Stannard

A different take on a traditional melody for Brass band with solo Tenor horn, the Skye Boat Song begins with a slow, lyrical solo melody on the Tenor Horn, building gradually into full band, before moving into a faster jaunty waltz scherzo section, returning to a slightly slower reiteration of the theme to finish.

Behold the Power of God - Christopher Bnod

Behold the Power of God (2010) was written for and premiered by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band in dedication to their Musical Advisor at the time; the late Cornish composer Goff Richards who later described the work as 'a remarkable piece of writing'. The work's title, while implying a religious meaning, actually references Goff's name, with his full name Godfrey translating as 'God-peace' and Richards meaning 'Power'. Two energetic outer sections fall either side of a more lyrical middle section featuring the solo cornet. The perfect opening item at any concert.

Suite from Gloria - Karl Jenkins - Arranged & Edited Childs & Wainwright

"The Latin text of the Gloria is an ancient hymn of praise from the Christian tradition derived from the song of the angels who announce the birth of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel according to St Luke. The Gloria has formed part of the Ordinary of the Mass for many centuries, and in that context has been set by many composers; there are also independent settings by Handel, Vivaldi and Poulenc. But the opportunity to work with such an iconic text also afforded me an opportunity to explore how other religions perceive the Divine. This is an ongoing feature of my work, from the multi-faceted The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, the Japanese haiku in my Requiem to the ancient Arabic text in my Stabat Mater.” Karl Jenkins, June 2010Originally scored for choir, orchestra and ethnic percussion, Karl Jenkins’ Gloria received its world premiere on November 7th 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall, and was recorded in the same year by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karl Jenkins. This version for brass band and percussion was arranged and edited by Andrew Wainwright and Robert Childs, and received its premiere on November 16th 2014 at The Sage Gateshead performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The work is in five movements: I. The Proclamation: Gloria in Excelsis DeoThe Proclamation begins with a rousing fanfare featuring antiphonal cornet choirs, before unison plainchant introduces melodic lines for solo cornet flugel horn and tutti band. The movement closes with a return to the fanfare style. II. Prayer: Laudamus tePrayer is typical of Karl Jenkins; serenely beautiful and lyrical in style. This movement features various soloists and works well in isolation. III. The Psalm: Tehellim - Psalm 150The Psalm is vibrant and high paced featuring ethnic style percussion. Virtuosic in nature the movement also makes use of the antiphonal cornet choirs.IV. The Song: I’ll Make MusicThe Song represents the ‘Golden Section’ of the suite and is presented here as a cornet solo. Like Prayer, this heavenly music is also effective as a stand alone concert item.V. The Exaltation: Domine Deus The Exaltation follows the same form as The Proclamation. With a lyrical middle section featuring solo horn, flugel and solo cornet, the start and finish make use once again of brilliant antiphonal cornet choirs.Suite from Gloria can be heard on 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD available to buy here.

    Novella - Ben Hollings

Novella was originally written for Eminence Brass Quartet to display the lyrical qualities of the ensemble through use of simplistic writing, whilst providing a reflective piece for the audience to enjoy.I decided to arrange Novella into a duet for Cornet and Euphonium after deciding that the lyrical writing would transfer into a duet setting effectively. The piece tells the tale of a short musical story where interweaving musical lines are showcased in the solo parts and are set against a simple, yet effective, brass band accompaniment.

    Bass Trombone Concerto

Written in 2006 for Roger Argente, Gareth Wood brings his considerable experience of writing for brass, and brass bands in particular, to an instrument not often blessed with opportunities for solo exposure. It is scored for soloist accompanied by traditional brass band line-up, including timpani and two percussion, and follows the standard three-movement pattern. In the first movement, the soloist launches straight into the musical argument with a low-lying repeated quaver figure punctuated by the band. A lyrical second subject in the high register is also entrusted to the soloist, and the movement comes to a thrilling conclusion. The slow movement opens softly with the percussion, and a mournful bass line sets the mood for a thoughtful long melody. It reaches a powerful climax, which subsides to a return of the opening mood. In the march-like finale, the soloist is pitted against a number of solo instruments from the band and a driving ostinato carries the momentum through to the blazing ending.Duration: 13:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, bongos, bass drum, side drum, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, claves, triangle, tambourine, xylophone and glockenspielGrade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands

Out of Shadows - Andrea Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 3 (Soloist 3.5) A fun and melodic euphonium solo with brass band by Andrea Price. Commissioned by the Blackley Brass Band for use at the French Open Championships, Out of Shadows is an approachable yet interesting euphonium solo with a contrast of fast, technical playing and slow, lyrical melodies. The piece does not tell a story as such, but the title is derived from the two moods apparent in the piece. The solo starts in a dark and mysterious way in a minor key, with driving rhythms in the band parts and detached, rhythmic playing from the soloist. The second part of the piece is more flowing and in a lighter, major key. Duration: 00:04:00

    Scarborough Fair - Andrea Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 4.5 (Soloist 6) A new take on an old favourite for Marimba / Xylophone and Brass Band by Andrea Price. The beautiful lilting melody of Scarborough Fair has been expertly woven through contrasting sections of this piece, and unlike most percussion solos there is a chance for the performer to demonstrate their slow lyrical playing as well as their technical wizardry. Scarborough Fair was premiered in the gala concert at the 2014 German Brass Band Championship, with the composer as the soloist accompanied by the Black Dyke Band. The solo can be played on either xylophone, marimba or both and requires good technique and stamina in both four and two mallet disciplines.
