The Lost Chord - Arthur Sullivan

Sullivan composed The Lost Chord whilst watching at his brother Fred's bedside during his last illness. The manuscript is dated 13th January 1877, five days before his brother's death. He had been trying to set the words of Adelaide Procter to music for several years, but did not succeed until faced with Fred's passing. The success of the song was immediate. None other than the Prince of Wales was said to have remarked that he would travel the length of his future kingdom to hear it sung. Sullivan later commented: 'I have composed much music since then, but have never written a second Lost Chord'. This arrangement for Solo Euphonium and Brass Band is featured on David Childs's third solo album, Hear My Prayer (DOYCD166).

Deep Inside the Sacred Temple - Pearl Fishers Duet (Euphonum Duet) - Georges Bizet

Bizet's opera, The Pearl Fishers, has the exotic setting of a quiet fishing village on the island of Ceylon in the time of antiquity. The plot revolves around best friends Zurga and Nadir, who swear an oath of friendship, vowing never again to let the love of a girl, Leila, come between them. However, when Leila returns, Nadir ignores his promise. Zurga wishes to kill them both but remembers an earlier act of loyalty and instead masterminds a selfless plot to save their lives. The opera is filled with rich melodies, particularly the tenor and baritone duet 'Au fond du temple saint' (Deep Inside the Sacred Temple), where Zurga and Nadir swear their oath of friendship. This has become known to audiences as 'The Pearl Fishers Duet'; here expertly arranged as a euphonium duet by Robert Childs. David & Robert Childs perform this arrangement accompanied by the Hendon Salvation Army Band on the Doyen CD Hear My Prayer (DOYCD166).

I ll Walk With God - Nicholas Brodszky and Sammy Cahn

The 1954 film, The Student Prince, is based loosely on Sigmund Romberg's operetta, with I'll Walk With God by Webster & Brodszky replacing one of the dated Romberg numbers. The part of the Prince was played by Edmund Purdom who lip-synched the songs to recordings by Mario Lanza. The story is generally quite light and witty in character. However, I'll Walk With God is sung by the Prince as he accompanies his father's coffin to its final resting place. This arrangement was commissioned by David Childs, and is included on his solo CD, Hear My Prayer. It is available on the Doyen label, DOY CD166.

    Sleepless Cities - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

I have been very fortunate in my life to have visited many wonderful countries and places around the world as a musician, whether it is as a composer, performer, conductor or soloist. From my experiences I wanted to compose a piece of music that showcases cities that never stop and have a constant hubbub of energy. The ‘Sleepless Cities' that have influenced the basis of this work are New York, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Zurich, Cairo and Dubai. However, when composing this piece I decided it would be impossible to assign a particular musical theme that sums up each city, as they all have such a rich and diverse cultural establishment. Therefore I opted not to compose this piece in separate movements to identify each city. Instead, I composed a piece where each city blends into one another, almost as if you were taking a speedy cab ride through each bustling metropolis without a break and without the constraints of time or distance. With each metaphoric turn round a street corner you arrive in a different city and before the listener can get used to the surroundings the cab turns again into another conurbation.Sleepless Cities is composed using melodic lines that follow in the traditional western classical style. However, as some of these places are so culturally diverse, you will also hear other cultural musical influences; for example the opening uses elements of an Indian Raga and the euphonium cadenza at bar 126 is based on the Middle Eastern Islamic call to prayer. You will also hear examples of gamelan music and the use of consecutive 4th and 5th intervals including the pentatonic scale which is a trade mark of Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian traditional music. There are also a number of occasions where both the western and eastern musical styles amalgamate highlighting the natural harmony that the differing genres share in one place.Paul Lovatt-Cooper 2009
