    Barcelona - Mercury & Moran - Harper, P

'Barcelona' was one of the biggest hits of Freddie Mercury's solo career. Reflecting his love of opera with high notes and Montserrat Caballe's operatic voacls it was a key part of the 1992 Summer Olympics. A wonderful piece arranged by Philip Harper

    Don't Stop Me Now - Mercury, F - Harper, P

This prize-winning arrangement of the Queen track from the 1978 album Jazz begins with a deliciously harmonized flugel solo before exploding into life. The song is one of Queen's most popular and, with Philip Harper's usual recipe of no nonsense scoring with added showmanship, is guaranteed to bring the house down at any concert.3rd section +

    Far and Away - Williams, J - Harper, P

A scrappy, dirt-poor Irish tenant farmer hooks up, in unlikely fashion, with the equally feisty daughter of a wealthy landowner, and together they sail for America to seek their ultimate destiny in the 1893 Oklahoma land rush. An ideal vehicle for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who are both beautiful and engaging - problem is a dire lack of story to fill the lulls between fight scenes. Five times Academy Award winner John Williams' music score saves the day as he dips his brush into the very colourful waters of Celtic themes . . . the results are exquisite. Philip Harper's stunning arrangement won the best new arrangement/composition at the 1995 Spennymoor competition.2nd section +

    Judge Dredd - Silvestri, A - Harper, P

Arranged for brass band by Philip Harper. Undoubtedly one of the worst movies I've seen, the acting is terrible, the storyline violent and banal . . . but the soundtrack . . . lots of fanfares, strident chords and music that takes us "out of this world".

    Lux Aeterna - Harper, P

The title Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) can be interpreted on a number of levels. Musically it has a rather mystical feel to it, and the single note with which the piece begins continues uninterrupted throughout, like an inextinguishable flame, or a constant source of hope. There are lyrical and song-like solo lines for cornet, flugel and euphonium. In a recent review Paul Hindmarsh described the piece as a touching new work by Philip Harper that would have got my vote for best new work for its technical ingenuity if not its 'wow factor'.Listen to Cory BandCourtesy of World of Brass
