    Peacemakers - Dan Price - -

Peacemakers was composed for Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. It received its world premiere on November 17th 2014 at The Sage and concluded their winning ‘Brass in Concert' program, ‘Lest We Forget'.As well as commemorating the centenary of World War I, 2014 also marked the 75th Anniversary of the outbreak of Word War II. Dan Price's Peacemakers pays tribute to those who fought, and uses two contrasting musical ideas as its basis. The motifs and material for the first theme take inspiration from Morse code patterns, and as the work nears a triumphant close the allied forces of World War II are remembered through the words of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill broadcast on 20th August 1940. This speech can be narrated. Alternatively, a free audio download is available from the downloads section of this site.Peacemakers has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.

Smile - Charlie Chaplin - Jonathan Bates

Smile received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014 by trombone soloist Chris Gomersall and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The piece formed part of their winning Brass in Concert programme entitled ‘Lest We Forget'.A young Charlie Chaplin starred in his first movie in February 1914, six months after the outbreak of World War I, and by July 1915 Chaplin had become a cultural phenomenon as the great entertainer. He was the film industry's first international star and a particular favourite of the troops.Conceived as the instrumental theme for Chaplin's 1936 comedy Modern Times, the song known to us all as Smile was composed by Chaplin himself. This arrangement features the original version of the song, before breaking into an upbeat big band version of the song, as performed by Michael Buble, featuring an extended jazz break for either Flugel Horn or Cornet.Al Sharq has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.

Brassed Off Fantasy - Dan Price - -

Commissioned in 2013 by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and included in their Brass in Concert program the same year, Brassed Off Fantasy is a skilfully written selection of music which appears in the 1996 film Brassed Off, which of course, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band are synonymous. The selection includes some of the popular music of the film, Londonderry Air, Finale from William Tell and The Florentiner March but the composer has cleverly disguised their musical settings with the Florentiner appearing as a German Beer Keller Waltz and William Tell written as a slow melody. Brassed Off Fantasy is a selection, which will please the audience and is fun for the band to perform yet breathes new life into the old Brassed Off favourites.

    Eventus (Lake of Dreams) - Paul Lovatt-Cooper - -

Eventus – Lake of Dreams was composed for Dr. Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band especially for the 2015 Brass In Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead. The music acts as a curtain raiser, introducing the band in sections, initially featuring the percussion and low brass. A virtuoso duet then ensues, quickly followed by a flugel and horn duet leading into each section of the band being individually showcased, before the conductor finally enters the stage.Inspired by the Lacus Somniorum (Lake of Dreams), the music is optimistic in style and follows Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s trademark formula, creating a spine-tingling ‘opener’ with a difference! The work received its world premiere performance during Grimethorpe’s August 2015 tour of Australia and is featured on the CD ‘Grimethorpe Entertain’.

    Al Sharq - Daniel Hall - -

Al Sharq (pronounced al-sha-rak) was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as part of their programme for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead. The piece is an exciting and exotic concert work for brass band, which is heavily influenced by the genres ‘Third Stream' and ‘Arabic'. The composition is highly rhythmical and percussion heavy, which makes use of ‘Tam-tam vibrato' - a technique which was invented by the composer especially for this composition. There are plenty of opportunities for the musicians to try something different, such as the aleatoric harmonic framework at the opening of the composition, shouting, ‘hi-fiving', special choreography and even playing a didgeridoo!Al Sharq is a technically demanding piece which exploits the talents of all sections of the ensemble, especially the principal solo cornet, who starts the piece with an atmospheric cadenza. All of this makes Al Sharq a powerful and entertaining experience for both performer and listener.Al Sharq has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.
